That's a matter of semantics. Any "web presence" is "Broadcast" from the servers.

No it isn't. The main BBC website is broadcasting. h2g2's 'community' isn't broadcasting in any sense of the word. It's *narrowcasting*.

Perhaps in terms of numbers using the service. In terms of geographic coverage, however, it's far more "broad" than BBC Television.

em6 - I'm sorry I wasn't able to tell the community before the news broke. Unfortunately the announcment on H2G2 had to be tied into a wider accouncement about BBC Online so this was out of my hands.
I'm also sorry that in some places the news has been misreported as H2G2 "closing". This was inaccurate but again outside my control, although I did get the BBC News website to correct their story.

Much as though I love hootoo, I have for some time wondered exactly how a site such as this fits in with the rest of the BBC.
This is sad, but ever since wiki became ubiquitous I have always thought todays annoucement was a "when" rather than an "if".

OH! I hope all can be saved somehow, Where there is a will there is a way.
I love to visit this little corner of sanity and humor in this crazy old world.
I like the new look of h2g2, fresh and bright.

Hopefully someone like yahoo or google will decide to take us on.
I have very little hope for a consortium of us researchers being able to do it on our own.

So we move to a site that uses ads..so what..you can always use Firefox and a handy little plugin that blocks ads..
If that's the way to go then lets do it and not waste time faffing about.Let's thank the BBC and move on.
I'm amazed they are getting rid of sports related community pages though.

If it wasn't for the BBC we wouldn't be having this conversation. Let's remember: they stepped in and rescued h2g2 when nobody else would and kept it going for a long time.

Let's also remember that the BBC would rather not be making cuts like this - it's the money.

And to all those non-UK users who feel entitled to have a go at the Beeb: go slag off your own broadcasting corporations. You can slag off the BBc when you pay your licence fee.

Come on it isn't really just the money as much as a political campaign against the BBC speared by those who "owe" Rupert Murdoch.
The blame lies with our scumbag government and their chums at News International.

Nick - this is a shock. I hope you and your staff manage to survive this round of cutbacks. I appreciate the service you have given to this and other online projects over the years.
Just one question I can think of right now:
Will the current redesign remedial work continue to its successful conclusion? It would be difficult to sell something which isn't really fit for use right now.
Key: Complain about this post
