We're delighted to announce that h2g2 content is now included in the main BBCi search. You can try this by typing a search term into the search box in the BBCi toolbar above. It's not quite as h2g2-specific as the h2g2 search system (it doesn't care about the type of Guide Entyr, for example) but it's a great step forward.

Cool
I notice the skin is included in the listed URL I was *shouted* at for doing that not long ago.
But still way cool

neoBrad - no I'm not! I'm lying! Posted Apr 15, 2002
I've been finding h2g2 entries in the BBci searches for the last few weeks.
Has it just been made *official* now?

In fact it has entries in twice
My wonderful Eden entri is number 3 on a search for "Eden" in A******R and number 12 in Goo - ie on second page
So if we get more skins will it appear more times?

"Is that to be used as a replacement for the rather h2g2 search engine?"
Nope!
As for the skins thing, well, the main BBC search uses the Google engine to scan sites within the BBC, so it won't be able to create URLs without skins in them. It isn't perfect, but the point is that we're in the main BBC search, and this is excellent news for traffic and awareness within the BBC.
The best way to find DNA content is the search on DNA sites, though. One day they might be fully integrated, but for now, this is rather lovely.

And yes, it might mean that things appear a number of times, depending on the skins available. It all depends on how Googlebot works, and I don't even pretend to know...

It'd be nice to have a similar approach to the BBC News search engine: just type in the text and it offers you a choice of results from BBC News, results from BBC Sports, and results from the rest of BBC Online.

that's great guys.....but isnt it kind of dangerous the have it not discriminate between edited and unedited stuff. we could get a rep for misleading info when someone looks at a page set up as a joke or part of a game but doesnt realise it's not edited guide.

True, FABT.
And the engine mixes and mingles conversation postings, USpaces and entries. Is there a way of adding some more structure as in edited entries first?

The ala**ster thing in the link frightens me though. Most of the italics use it, now the BBC uses it! What is the world coming to? Soon Linda will be using it!!

All good however the Alabaster thingy () is odd - I had not realised that one of the graphics Ottox constructed that I have borrowed for the manifesto uses Goo Blue as a background colour - looks odd in 'baster...

No chance of that Strider! Although I've been thinking that entries look neater in Alabaster when viewed on someone else's pc from a distance, if I get a link with alabaster then I cringe and change it back to Goo!
My latest Entry is number 1 and number 2! Unedited is first though.
AFAIK googlebot will list all entries it finds, if the entries are similar it will count as the most important the one with most (important) links to it.

Hmm, okay, but even with the drawbacks this is a very good thing, methinks.
Now all we need is the new skin... are you saving it for my birthday?
