I have some ideas but I am taking time to sift through them to decide which are the guaranteed klaxons. Those I will use.
Meanwhile,on a completely different species connection. During a Champions League match involving Arsenal recently, a grey squirrel ran on to the pitch during the match, giving rise to the question "Who has the most Champions league appearances, Tottenham Hotspur or a squirrel?"
I will be back.

Football has been banned by the authorities numerous times with little effect.
I think it was in the reign of one of the early Edwards that the authorities banned it because they feared that it was taking the population away from archery practice, a more useful skill.
And the link with birds? Arrows are tipped with feathers!

I also noticed "There is a logical reason!!"
Logic it is said can prove anything, so here goes:
Birds may be descended from dinosaurs.
And
Dinosaurs may have been wiped out by the after effects of a meteor/comet strike on Earth.
And
The film "Deep Impact" dealt with the attempt to destroy a comet on a collision course to Earth.
And
Elijah Wood appeared in the film "Deep Impact" and also starred in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy as Frodo Baggins.
And
Frodo Baggins' mentor and guide was Gandalf who was played by Ian McKellen.
And
Ian McKellen appeared as Magneto in X-Men: the last stand.
And
One of Magneto's henchmen was Juggernaut played by Vinny Jones.
And
Vinny Jones had a successful career as a professional footballer with Millwall FC.
And
Millwall FC are a football club based in London.
And
Chelsea FC are also a football club based in London.
And
The Life President of Chelsea FC is Richard Attenborough.
And
Richard Attenborough starred in "Jurassic Park" a film about dinosaurs.
And
Dinosaurs may be the precursors of birds.
quod erat demonstrandum

Liver bird, either an eagle, a cormorant or a mythical bird depending on who you talk to, symbol of the city of Liverpool.
And Liverpool football club, the greatest club in Europe, yesterdays has beens, or the fifth best Spanish club, depending on who you talk to.

perhaps a distinction could be made whether we are talking football or soccer, given the multi cultural nature of the site...do know a lot of early footballs were pigs bladders. racking my brains for connection to the new designed shape, or if its was a prelude to a hunt/pheasant shoot in the middle ages...

It's not that link between table football, latin and birds is it? //
The creator of Subbuteo wanted to call it originally "Hobby" as it was.
However the name was copyrighted to someone like Mattel, so instead he called it after the latin designation of a bird called the Hobby (Falco subbuteo) a sub-species of buzzard (buteo buteo)
Which is how Subbuteo got it's name.

Ah Subbuteo, happy memories.
In the beginning it involved thin cardbord players set into slots in half spheres on a piece of green baize.
In a few years it had expanded, first thin plastic men and then full three dimensional models. The goals had real nets, you could get referees and linesmen, coaches and physio's. Additional extras included advertising hoardings and floodlights.
If you were in receipt of bankers bonus level pocket money you could even buy replicas of the FA cup and the League trophy.
The range of club colours was enormous. I can even remember my younger brother playing in a table football league at his youth club.
His team played in the colours of West Bromwich Albion (he liked the stripes and Man Utd were already taken). He took the game so seriously that his team all had names that he had invented, the two famous goalscorers I can recall to this day were Meshman and Cubley.
Sadly my brother died some years ago, but this was a pleasant memory of happy times.
Thanks.

"you could get referees and linesmen"
It was oddly realistic how the refs tended to get in the way and the linesmen never kept up with play I have (at least I think they're still in the loft or somewhere) some subbuteo terraces and spectators but I never painted them so it always looked like a crowd of Autons!
Oh and Lil, don't get carried away with your point, you'll need at least ten before you're allowed to press a button
