Base equals the greatest digit in a place value expression plus one, unless otherwise specified.

0 = 0

1 = 1

2 = 10

3 = 11

4 = 100

5 = 12

6 = 20

7 = 13

8 = 22

9 = 14

X = ...

...

X = 10 base 10

You bruised my brain.

I almost thought I knew what you were saying then it all fell apart.

I thought I knew the series until about 5 then everything fell apart.

I don't know what a "place value expression" is.

smiley - biroI should have spelled "X = 10 base 10" as 'X = ten base ten', as X is a Roman numeral for ten, also so used in duodecimal numbers.

The object is to write the counting number (n) in the highest possible base other than base (n + 1) under the rule that the base is always one more than the value of the greatest digit in the figure.

5 & 6 for example are in base three.
