Is Falkirk close enough?

Post 1

Dr E Vibenstein (You know it is, it really is.)

Hi Lyns, this sounds like a really good idea. I'm in Falkirk, so not exactly Glasgow but only half an hour or so away. Anything I can do to help? I'm trying to round up some other Scottish researchers too... smiley - smiley

Hi - thanks for getting in touch. If you know Glasgow and have any recommendations for the guide, I think Falkirk could count as being close enough! Thanks for putting out the word to the others as well. Perhaps we could chat more about this?
Cheers
Lyns

While I no longer live in Glasgow (Dangun ung Blastun!) I did for long enough, still own a flat there and can exert my considerable influence (well give it a go at least) on a sizable number of people up there. So, if you are looking for anecdotes, stories etc. I can supply, and if you want some more leg work type of stuff, I know a number of dossy student types who I can probably get to do something, provided I keep buying them beer. So, feel free to drop me a note, or even email [email protected]. Love to help.

I live in Edinburgh but I'd like to hep - haven't been in Glasgow for a while so doing some field work would be an excuse to nip throught there again. Let me know the kind of thing you might like me to help with (given that I don't actually live in Glasgow) and I can probably pick the brains of some of my friends that have been there as students for ideas on possible topics.

Lost in Scotland

As the honorable Dr Vibenstibben mentioned, he has been rounding up the troops around the Glasgow area, of which I am one.
I currently reside a bit outside of Glasgow, though (Greenock) but I guess I could go for this project idea.
Just give me a holler and I'll see what I can do (nothing until monday, since I'm on vacation at the moment, thoughsmiley - smiley).

Hi

Thanks again for getting back to me. Regarding the content for the project... there's tons of scope. I'm hoping that it
will be driven by the people taking part - that way we'll get the 'unconventional wisdom' of h2g2 rather than more
straightforward touristy stuff.

I guess the kind of things would be favourite spots in Glasgow - this could be anything from pubs, clubs, shops, restaurants...
to views, buildings, interesting walks. Or even more general - like a guide to the Glasgow patter... irn bru or any other
Glasgow institutions. I'll probably try to achieve a balance between mainstream (Modern Art Gallery/Tramway etc) and
quirky (particularly cool launderette/swimming pool - whatever!) Once we've got a group of volunteers, we can work out
a good cross-section of things to feature.

Speak soon,

Lynsey

Hi Lyns

I'm Peta the Community Editor of h2g2.

I hope things are going well. The h2g2 Researchers are a lovely group of people.smiley - smiley
Thanks for offering to help with the project everyone!

There is an existing edited Guide entry on Irn Bru, you'll find it here: http://www.h2g2.com/A219863- If any of the Scots have anything to add to it, please leave a message in the conversation forums, and I'll get the Editorial team to update it. Thanks... smiley - smiley

Well, in that case, here is a thing I did (not edited) on my old local in the west end of Glasgow http://www.h2g2.com/A171965 It could probably do with an edit, I did do it over a year ago now.
Also, are you looking for photos as well, or are you going to get them yourself? I reckon things like the granite steps in Kelvingrove Park and the walkway to the SECC are great "Scenes" in a filmic sort of sense and they should get a mention/picture. Gibbering a bit now, but it is a Friday afternoon smiley - smiley

Oh, what about historical figures associated with the town, such as Lord Kelvin ( http://www.h2g2.com/A356889 ) famous physicist up at the Uni?

Thanks to everyone for these great ideas and articles - favourite pubs, views etc are just the ticket. The next step is working out how to get the information in the articles across with sound and visuals, so that Glasgow really comes to life. Possible options would be filming a volunteer in the actual pub (Munchkin? - beer would of course be provided!)... or maybe recording a story (like Lord Kelvin) whilst showing one of those atmospheric photos you mentioned...
Lets keep talking about this - or you can e-mail me direct

Well, since everyone's always so keen to have a meet-up, maybe some of us could get together and, er, research some pubs. smiley - smiley

Underground Caroline

Quite keen to write something on the Glasgow Underground system. I'm not a trainspotter or anything, it's just that it's a bit of a well-loved institution and I reckon it needs some attention. I have a soft spot for transport systems that avoid any possibility of me getting hopelessly lost by going round in a big circle. Or has someone already done a guide entry on it? I'll go and check.....nope, can't find anything anyway. smiley - smileysmiley - star

Sounds like we're planning the second Scottish researchers meet up guys. Just a reminder I have upped my honourary and ancestral claims to being a Scottish researcher by promising to get married in my clan tartan. Linz insists that I show off my knees to the world. Who am I to argue? smiley - winkeye

Hie thee to a pubbery

Post 20

Munchkin

So, as we all seem keen, hows about we do a bit of pub researching over Christmas/ New Year? I expect to be in town from the 27th (ish) to the 5th or 6th. We could discuss this idea and try to decide on some articles perhaps. Even take the afternoon to point at things in a touristy, this would look good on a website, kind of way.
Thoughts, abuse, overly complex smilies?
