Yesterday, I got a phone call from my mother, and she did something she's never done before...
She tried to blackmail me - emotionally!
Titania -----> Kristina = 4 milliseconds
I raised my voice and told her that:
'You have no right whatsoever to do that!'
'I am in charge of my life - not you!'
'I'll do what I want with my time and money!'
And then I hung up, because I could feel my self control bursting, and it would only have ended up with me yelling at her, and I didn't want to do that.
I was absolutely furious afterwards - so furious that I cried!(try combining with )
I'm still very angry with her - angry, angry, ANGRY!

I can better this, my daughter tried to emotionally blackmail me before Christmas.
I stood my ground and refused to give in.
As a result we did not see each other, and still haven't.
Not since last August.

Oh blimey!
I sure hope it won't take that long for me and my mother - but we're usually quick to forgive and forget, both of us...
Has either of you tried to contact the other?

wow if the world was that simple all would be well....
but for me it would be hard to do that although i am stubborn as hell.
it aint good either when mothers are really controlling.
authoritarians are scary. like my mother.

Usually either I or my mother call the other at least once a week (we live in different cities).
Being stubborn like a mule, I decided not to call her until she calls *me* and apologizes.
She hasn't called.
That's pretty much it right now.

Friends you can choose according to your own preferences and by deliberate decision. Family is what you're born with, for better or worse. Consider it like a random roll of the dice in a role-playing game. You may not like the what comes up, but you always have a choice in how you'll deal with it. Take another few moments to think it through, as any true adventurer would, and settle on a best course of action. Sure, your Charisma score may take a beating for a while, but you can regain that with a bit more experience. Maybe using something out of your treasure trove would smooth over a misunderstanding and help you regain an ally in the process. Or you could suggest both of you join in a quest; there's nothing like facing the trials of the world to bring people closer together. (You might try finding the 'perfect' handbag for one another...)
Everything I know about human relations, I learned while playing AD&D.

Ah, but you see Hyp - that's what she used to try and blackmail me with. She threatened with not going to Austria with me (and I'm the one paying, for both her and me!)

That is a risky sort of blackmail, when you might have answered: "Fine with me, alone I can afford twice as long!"

Well, two can play this game...
Once I get an OK from my boss on my vacation request, I'll book and pay for two persons going to Austria.
If my mother hasn't called me back yet, than I'll call her and tell her that I've paid for her too and that, if she doesn't go, it'll be total waste of money (my money).
She's always been an economical person, and I very much doubt she'd refuse to go.
Which would make her threat meaningless, and I can carry on and do what she tried to blackmail me into doing.
See, I had already been thinking about doing it for some time myself when she tried to blackmail me into doing it (not knowing I had already been thinking about it).
That, of course, made it impossible for me to actually do it! Yes, I'm being pigheaded - but guess who I got that from?

And if she refuses, can you take someone else?
A good friend of yours she very much dislikes?

Ah - no one can take the wind out of my sails like my mother!
So - she finally called me. The first thing she said was 'please don't hang up on me!'. I didn't of course - I wanted to hear her apologising.
She then went on to tell me that she's going to Helsinki with the Finnish Club and could she get me anything from the pharmacy (you can buy a lot more stuff without prescription in Finland than in Sweden).
After telling her that yes, I'm out of nose spray (a very good sort that'll clear up a clogged up nose in no time) she went on to talk about general things like the weather.
I didn't contribute much to the conversation, so she asked 'Are you still angry? Surely you understand that I didn't really mean anything of what I said?'
So I told her how angry and hurt I had been when she threatened and tried to blackmail me, to which she replied 'but I didn't mean it!'
Oh well - what can you say? At least she'll know what'll happen if she ever tries it again. And yes, it was a relief that she called - I had been a bit worried about her (heart condition, high blood pressure).
Anyway, I'll book and pay the Austria trip before visiting my mother over Easter - facing fait accomplit (sp?) ought to keep her from trying any tricks with me again...

Good thing it sounds like normal relations again.
Just make sure the Helsinki trip is not at the same time as you plan to go to Austria

Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Mar 18, 2005
Ah no - the Helsinki trip is this weekend, and the Austria trip at the end of June, which means I'll probably miss the London meet (but I'll try to attend the Copenhagen meet and another meet)
