Thanks E G Mel
Will not hesitate to come to you and Jonny for help. Us Over 70's need all the help we can get in this modern fast moving world.
Good luck to you both in what you do.

I'm impressed over 70 and using the intenet
Saying that my grandpa started using wmail when he was 87 (~3 years ago!) He was tickled pink when I sent him a photo of my new haircut! Shame to say he doesn't really use it much anymore

I really don't know why though, I think it's just a stereotype that the older generation can't/wont use the internet, I'm sure they are all online secretly!

Self taught : Got a BBC 'B'/Acorn computer in 83 as a retirement hobby. The BBC had a computer literacy programme running at that time.
Watched it and became hooked. Still prefer RiscOS to Windows.

Almost anything is better than Windoze!
However it does have it's uses, mainly because it has a monopoly on the whole world

Unfortunately
BG has a lot to answer for.
I didn't have any need of his bloated system until I decided to go on the Internet. Sadly at that time RiscOS browsers had not got full compatability. I could have done it via a Windows emulator but speed loss and compatability drove me to buy a Windows based PC. In any case it wasn't that much more expensive - As usual if money enters the equation BG wins.
When he gave away his own browser free with Windows he really put the boot in. I hope that ARM/RiscOS can live with the man. Apple Mac. keep limping along and the Linux brigade may out flank him.

Linux is good but it's just not user friendly enough for the non computer literate of us all. If it had a more windows feel it might have a better chance of taking off, but at the moment it is still seen to be the build your own computer type system.
Notice I said seen to be, it's actually very easy to use and you don't have to use the other bits, just like most people don't use dos in windows.
The other thing is the support issue, buying a computer with linux installed and ready to use is just not something you do nowadays

Can an old 70+ introduce a young 20+ to the latest of a long line of BBC Basic/RiscOS computers http://www.microdigital.co.uk/omstd.htm .
If I decide to upgrade. This may well be the one. If it has a full Internet compatabiliy.
The first programme that I ever wrote way back in 83 still runs on the latest RiscOS PC.(I had to slow 'em down a bit) this is mainly because a BBC Basic interpreter is build into RiscOS Machines. The whole operating system is on chips, no switching backwards and forwards to a hard disc.

Hello, are you new to h2g2?
I'm popping in every now and again so my postings may be a little sporadic!

Hmmm... Sabbatical....
That's a good way of putting it... I've had WAY too much work to do to really spend any time on-line... And next yearI'm going to have absolutely TONNES of work to do...
Also the work connection has been recently as my quicker connection only works for a post or two before just timing out everytime - something to do with MS Proxy... But I should sort that out soon when we get our new 10 meg connection up and running, behind a decent Firewall (connection there, FW connected, but not working yet )....

I'm sure you didn't mean it in a bad way but it is generally considered a bit off to post 'blanket' messages like that last one.
Don't worry about it too much as it wasn't too blanket (only 5 of us!) and you've picked a target audience (ie the prayer group).
Small piece of advise though is next time to make it more personal to the person you're writing to, fellow christian is a bit in my mind. Yes I am a christian but I am many other things as well, one of them is E G Mel
I'll have a look at it later though I warn you I have had some bad experiences with online religious debates and now tend to steer clear. Judging by the current state of affairs in America there will be plenty of them around soon

Thanks for replying to my franglais/cymraesneg posting! My Welsh is patchy but improving - being brought up in Essex kind of robbed me of my Welsh herritage! And now that I'm living in the West Mids it is becoming hopeless. Would like to do a Welsh thread, but my side would be rather stilted since I only really have internet access at uni. Drop by my page for a chat, in English, French or Welsh, I run a very cosmopolitan space!
See ya, hwyl fawr, a plus,
Cogs
