This is the Message Centre for E G Mel
Hello
E G Mel Posted Jul 29, 2002
I must admit Peta answered the question too when I was nattering to her on her space, I just know what it's like when a major player ducks out!
Is he likely to come back afterwards or has he got true itchy feet?
Mel

Sorry Mel its now evening and wet.
Been busy using my learning curve
Its all rather traumatic.
I've spent more time on my computer today than ever before.
Must get these ID's sorted out one way or another.
Pity about the two casualties hope they weren't friends of yours.
I've a lot of Ste-udying to do
Will call again

E G Mel Posted Aug 5, 2002
I wouldn't call them casualties, I think all threads eventually die out, some more abruptly than others.
Watch out h2g2 is addictive and it'll run up your phone bill like you wouldn't believe!

I'm late again Mel
I don't stay on line with h2g2. Have other things to do.
NTL is my ISP (Cable)
The service I am on includes Digital TV (Standard package) : Telephone (2 Lines) : and Internet
Cost £27/Month no other charges except for telephone calls.
One telephone line devoted to the internet cost nothing extra.
There is a cut off every 2 hours that needs to watched, but I can go back on straight away.

E G Mel Posted Aug 6, 2002
Oooh nasty cutoff makes downloading things over night difficult, thank God for resumable downloads!

Bit late: Is there a way to set wake up calls without trolling postings ? Some conversation addicts. seem to pick things up in a shot.
------------------------------------------
I haven't found a need to download large files.
Half hour is my longest to date.
Usually log off and the log on again before starting.
No problems to date.
I can go on to Cable Broadband always on.
I think this would cost me another £10/mth.
See no need at the moment.

There is a pop up window that displays your conversations and refreshes every couple of minutes.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/MP197657?skip=0&show=25&s_type=pop&s_upto=&s_target=_blank
This should give you yours!
But it also depends how often you're online, I'm on 9-5 at work so I'm bound to respond quicker than someone who logs in once a week!

Thanks it seems to work OK.
Was it easy to find ?
If it's not interfering with your work ? .
Is there a way to find the link to a specific posting within a conversation.
Understanding
Jonny Posted Aug 9, 2002
Hi Ancient Brit! *waves to Mel*
You can find out more about popupconversations here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/hub/GuideML-POPUPCONVERSATIONS
To link to a specific posting, you need to find it's posting ID.
You can find it's ID by looking at the number on the end of the URL when you hover over the reply button. For example in post 206 of this thread, the reply is a link to http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/AddThread?inreplyto=2251463
if you take that end number 2251463 and put it in here - that should work!

I was just passing by Mel's space after reading a posting by her. I went into this thread, saw your post and thought I'd reply
I hope that reply made sense, I'll try aand explain a bit more if you want!

Everything OK Jonny.
I'm a relative Newbie to h2g2.
Had a look last night. Didn't quite get it all but I'll come back to you later if I may.
I don't like just dropping E G Mel like this will she take offence at us taking over her space like this ?
Shouldn't we go over to mine or yours. ?
Understanding
Jonny Posted Aug 10, 2002
No, don't worry, as long as we keep mentioning her every now and again we're not dropping off topic
And if she doesn't like us talking over here she can always tell us to go away. You don't mind though, do you Mel?
I'm sure as soon as she logs on again she'll join in the conversation again. There's quite a different sort of method of talking on h2g2 to that of a chat room, a lot of people think they're only talking to one person and if somebody else joins in then that's ruining the conversation, we tend to think differently, because they're all public message boards anyone can join in where they like! But as I say, if Mel doesn't want us to talk here, she can tell us!

Thanks for picking that one up Johnny. Ancient Brit was right I wouldn't have been back in till today (monday) and even then I wouldn't have been able to provide those links I really have been out of the loop too long.
Ancient Brit, the whole point of this thread is for people to drop in and say hello, it's a social area and I really don't mind who uses it!
Things I don't really like is if I'm in a conversation elsewhere and somebody uses this thread to try and start the same conversation here (though this is generally a good place to get my attention and say come and take a look at such and such with reference to the conversation we were having where ever), either I tell them that the original forum is the place to discuss or if they are asking things slightly off topic I suggest that we start a new conversation on my user space.
That way this remains the place of general chit chat, no set topic, and an easy way to find me!
As for interfering with my work, what do you think coffee breaks are for! Plus I haven't got a huge amount going on at the moment, and the work computers are very quick, just ask anyone who remembers when I used to ACE, I was a bit of a hog when it came to the new users list, they'd be done within an hour or so at the most! Unfortunately I just don't have the time anymore so I had to hand in my badge, I kept the Guru-ship though since I still know a fair bit about the site being an old h2g2er and such an active user last year!
