Welcome to Cogs' Page, People!
I am currently living in North Wales, having recently left university in Birmingham due to poor health. I was studying Civil Engineering. I am trying to find work in the sign language field, as a note-taker. I only have BSL level 1 at the moment, so can't be an interpreter yet.
I am 21 years old, half-Welsh, half-Cockney and I have lived in London, Essex, Anglesey and The West Midlands although not at the same time.
My languages are English, BSL, and Welsh. I have a smattering of French and I am starting to learn German.
I play acoustic guitar and the recorder (both fingerings). I like blues, jazz, some country, some rock and roll and some classical. I don't really have a favourite artist, but I like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Ertha Kitt, John Williams and Glenn Miller amongst others. I like the old musicals of stage and screen, and I am also fond of old comedies - The Goons, Morcambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, Flanders and Swann, Bob Newhart, Albert and Costello, you name it!
Most importantly I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Anyone who really wants to know anything, I will try to answer you but to be honest, the best way is to speak to the Witnesses the next time they call at your door. Or you can write to
Watchtower Bible and Tract Society,
The Ridgeway,
London
They will give you the same answers as I will because everything that we teach is founded in scripture. If I don't talk about my religion much it's because it is as much a part of me as the colour of my hair, or skin. People don't tend to talk about breathing or eating much after all!
I am researching for entries on Civil Engineering, and BSL. Any help gratefully recieved
My name derives from my sign name ENGINEER, which is based on interlocking cogs. As with anyone involved in the Deaf community, my sign name is used more than my real name!
I don't have the internet at home, so I use the library computer for one hour at a time, once or twice a week. This does mean that I won't always reply quickly, but I'll always try to reply to any messages I recieve.
I love to read, and DNA is a good writer. I must say though that I prefer the first half of the h2g2 series to the second. Also Dirk Gently's Detective Agency is better than The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.
Terry Pratchett is another whose early stuff is better than his more recent efforts. The first book of his I read was MORT and I loved it. However, Night Watch, The Fifth Elephant and The Truth were really take-it-or-leave-it by comparrison. The best Pratchett books are his books for kids. The Nome Trilogy, and the Johnny Maxwell books were funny and poingant at the same time.
I think that fantasy is a good way of getting your ideas across because you reach a wide audience, and are released to an extent from the laws of common logic. I like a book to provide a starting point for thoughts and/or discussion and fantasy is a good medium for this. Poetry is too, and I like Benjamin Zephaniah's and Allan Alhberg's poetry for this reason.
This entry is in GuideML thanks to the help of U135628 and U135642 with their article on spicing up your personal space. I have taken copious notes and intend to keep on coming back to touch-up this page until I have it how I want it.
Well, I've told you a bit about myself and obviously there is a lot that I haven't told you. That's not an oversight, that's deliberate - I value my privacy. Although, the internet being what it is, you, my dear , have no way of verifying any of the above. The h2g2 community is a world of masks and revels, so enjoy it but don't be too quick to believe everything you read.
This is Cogs (or is it?) signing off. 'Til next week, Nanoo, nanoo.
