Suspend dis-belief and try it again, its a long time since I read it but as I recall it's quite a grown up book for kids. What didn't you like about it?

As I recall there was one bit in a forest, and Joanna-the-seven/eight-year-old was very scared by this, and didn't want her mother to make her read any more. Joanna-the-eighteen-year-old may well still be scared...
