Terribly sorry to use ask for the wrong thing, I normally am dead set against abusing ask, but I think this is important and I know that more people check here than anywhere else.

A number of you guys live in London and since the phones are out checking up on people has been damn difficult. Since a lot of people are subscribed to ask I thought it might be an idea for anyone whos lives or works in the London area just to all make a post in the same place to say that they're okay.

Well, I'm fine (travelling away from London today) and SLG is hiding out in Bart's Hospital Stem Cell lab until further notice. Dunno when she'll get home tho' as they've shut down all transport links into/out of London.

I'm waiting to be told to go home, as I suspect it's utterly unfair on Jurors to be expected to concentrate on trials and worry about loved ones at the same time.

My husband (Scrumph) is OK and not being allowed to leave work. I'm OK, sat at home and definitely NOT going shopping for new clothes in Central London today.

I think shopping in central London for the next couple of weeks is out, to be honest.

And a gentle reminder to anyone attending the meet - make alternative transport arrangements. The Tube line nearest the meet is almost certainly still going to be out when the meet rolls around, and you'll need another method of getting around the metropolis.

We thought it might be appropriate to set up a specific page for people to talk about this. We'd also like to thank everyone who's sent us messages of support - it's very kind and very much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Sounds fair enough. Will a link be posted on the front page so people can find this and other related threads? Not only to prevent others from starting more threads on Ask but so people will be able to find this thread.

Number Six

Present and correct, posting from home.

I got as far as Manor House tube - closed - then walked to Finsbury Park - was told all Underground closed, tried to get a train into King's Cross but that had just been evacuated so came home with the idea of getting on my bike. My housemate had a similar experience.

I rang the BBC and they put me on standby to cover a late shift, was planning to cycle across North London without going anywhere near the centre. But they've since said they don't need me today - as I work for the Sport bit of News 24 there isn't that much I could do.

Looking at it, my feeling is that it seems to be quite specifically a terror campaign aimed at causing maximum possible disruption and, well, terror - rather than mass loss of life. The numbers of casualties are, of course, worrying but I think it might not be as large as is widely feared - probably in 3 figures but nearer that than 4.

What they are wanting to do is put fear and doubt and worry into the minds of everyone in London. But - and I fervently hope I'm not proved wrong here - history shows that once attacks like this are over, the chances of them happening again are pretty small.

That's what i'm hanging on to, at any rate.

Just a quick note to say hi. I've been cordened off (Artillery Lane) but we've just had our backup tapes delivered so it seems that traffic is moving again.

I'm not in London today, thankfully. Worked via Russell Square tube for many years, which I'm trying not to think about too much at present.

I remember getting caught up in bombings in the 90s and I'm heartened to see that the London spirit is much the same: "I've made my plans for the day and no amount of havoc is going to stop me." Quite right.
