I'm throwing this Entry open to all comers, I've totally run out of steam with this one as it turns out I know a lot less about FPS's than I thought I did.

Now, me, being an old-timer, would have started with Operation Wolf. Not heard of it?
It was an arcade game in the early 80s. You only had the one weapon 0 an Uzi - and you were stuff in the one position - behind a bunker - though you could move from left to right, though you always pointed in the same direction. The background remained static, and various bad guys ran towards you, shooting.
All very basic stuff, but it was a first-person shooter. Though obviously not as complicated as the modern games.

You must mention Unreal and the Unreal Tournament games, they're fantastic!
I have Unreal Tournament and don't bother with the single player or online multiplayer games, I just play against loads of bots in dozens of levels with mutators! Sniper Rifle in Domination Metal Dream, people!
You also need some way to finish it off - just a sentence like "Games developers are imporving all the time, and as technology improves and the developers have a better idea of what makes a good game, it surely can't be long before another great FPS is released to blow all of the above out of the water." Or something.

How about a mention of different multiplayer modes and a brief explanation of each? The ones which come to mind that you get on most games are Deathmatch and Capture the Flag but there must be more.

Great entry so far here's acouple of things you may like to add.
First I think you need to mention when Quake 2 and 3 were released. I also think you need to mention the Call of Duty series as whilst they are not as revolutionary as games like doom, quake, half life or halo they certainly have their fans.
You also might want to mention the Doom movie (that was terrible) and the up coming (2007) Halo movie. http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0464037/
It's has been written by Alex Garland (who wrote 28 Days Later)and being produced by Peter jackson of Lord of the Rings fame. The movie production crew are working closely with Bungie so it sounds like it is going to be good so far.
Finally I think you need to add some information on the Quake 4 which looks like it is going to be stunning visually. I've not played it so cannot comment on that,

Keep at it!

"Doom movie (that was terrible)"
Has there been one already then? Because there's one coming out next year, I think, starring The Rock and Karl Urban (Eomer from LOTR).

I've not seen it yet, but looking at the trailers they've changed the basic plot which sucks for a start.

OK maybe I'm going over the top a bit by saying it was terrible. It's just that it comes across as a bit of a cheap Aliens copy really. Not bad on its own as an dumb action movie but not DOOM at all.
The biggest problem is that there are NO demons this is because instead of their being a portal ripped into Hell the outbrake on Mars is caused by genetic mutants and zombie types. Doom is all about battling the Cyberdemons and Cacodemons of Hell it just doesn't feel right without them!
They have included some DOOM referances like the pinky demon and hell knights and having a BFG even if its not as impressive. The little bit of first person view like in the game near the end is also quite fun but I cannot get over the fact that the basic feel and imagery of the whole movie was wrong.
Whats DOOM without Hell?
