Have you read this book? The history of id Software until some time after Romero left. It's a very good read if you're interested in the subject.
Incidentally, I reckon your comments on Halo may be seen as contentious, not least by the HL2 fraternity, but from a historical perspective I was more surprised to find that Halo (a console FPS) got a section but Goldeneye (ditto) didn't.

Sorry, I didn't realise I was addressing one person who'd Elvised and another who'd picked the Entry from the FL. So the 'you' makes limited sense.

There was a mention of Goldeneye in the original entry, but it was little more than saying that GE was the best FPS ever.
The Halo stuff wasn't written (only re-edited) by me, I've not actually played Halo myself but left it in as it seems to be a really popular game.
