I'm just writing an Entry and think this document is very interesting but I can't make out the handwriting... http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EAXHMl1U4Y0/Wf8rxs8PI4I/AAAAAAAAHcQ/s7_6K36OgJw1wFbVCx8DFgLi4TbA_WgRACLcBGAs/s1600/idimage.jpg

Is the surname Buttgereit, or Buettgereit?
What is the Profession?
What colour are his Eyes?

Thank you! smiley - online2long

I have documents with similar writing

I think the surname is Brittgereit and the eyes are "blau"

As you have a DOB - could you check censuses for about that time.
I've been doing some family research and have been surprised at what survives and has been transcribed.

Good Luck

Okay, here's what I read.

Name: Berth. Buttgereit
From the signature, it looks like: Bertht Buttgereit (My guess would be 'Bertholt' abbreviated.)
born: 23. February 1891
in: Berlin
Nationality: Prussian
Occupation: Bookkeeper
Residence: Cologne, Schultstrasse 22.
Build: Medium
Hair: Light blond (This means 'actually blond', because a German will call someone with light brown hair 'dark blond')
Eyes: Blue
Shape of Face: Oval.
Identifying Marks: None.
This ID valid until: 3 May 1909.

Notes:
1. It's definitely 'Buttgereit'. That's a line indicating a 'u'. An umlaut would look different. Compare the name with the profession: Buchhalter. Same mark to indicate a 'u'.

2. Nice-looking guy. Reminds me of Peter Graves.

3. Good job reading that at all!

4. The signature of the Beamter (official) is, as the Germans always say, 'unleserlich' (unreadable). I believe they do this on purpose to dodge responsibility.

Thanks everyone, especially Dmitri for the comprehensive transcription smiley - biggrin Very useful details.

He does look like Peter Graves, yes!

I read somewhere that there are no censuses in Germany, but I did find that the telephone books are somewhat detailed, so I was able to confirm that his profession was Buchhalter (some of the B's definitely did look like L's, and the h's looked like f's... smiley - online2long).

I've written up my Entry A87903543 and put it in Peer Review smiley - biggrin

He survived the Nazi regime because he was "blond and blue-eyed"? smiley - laugh Probably he didn't stand out, so the less observant failed to notice.....

The only writing I would even take a comfortable guess at is "Brittgereit" and that is a genuine surname according to a quick google.

But I am 100% positive his eye color is sepia.

'Buttgereit' is also a name. Joerg Buttgereit is a German horror director - although I would not like to see his 'Blutige Exzesse im Fuehrerbunker'. In fact, I think I'd avoid his films completely...smiley - skull

Difficult fitting that material to other genres, though - you have to admit.
