Count in the normal way but insert a short two syllable word between the numbers.
My science master taught us this for darkroom work it went thus
1 kodak 2 kodak 3 kodak and so forth up to as far as you like lift the pace when you reach double digits.
test yourself against a stop watch until you get used to it, it works for me.

I was told it was 1 elephant 2 elephant etc. But I've never had any problem counting in seconds. My natural pulse is about 60 bpm or 1 per second, so counting seconds seems very natural to me. (Mind you, I've measured my pulse as low as 42 when I'm sleepy.

I can only remember "One Jack Robinson Two Jack Robinson" which has not two syllables, nor three (elephant) but four. I can only assume this is for low numbers.
So, now, having tried it against a stopwatch I find that you have to speak very quickly to get Jack Robinson into a second. Elephants are definitely more suitable.

I would use Will Robinson rather than jack Robinson, because this adds an element of danger...

They can?
When I was trying to train mine to run simple T-mazes, all they ever did in response to any form of stress or eustress I tried was to sporulate, transforming themselves into tiny shaggy mushrooms.
