You also asked how they work. If, for instance you want to buy a book from Amazon, you make yourself an account. Then you can either
get a free book (eg classics)
pay regular price for a book or
get a special 'Daily' deal book ( which is what I've tended to do)
for instance I bought the complete series of ten novels about Martin Beck, the Swedish detective, for 99p each recently. You just have to look regularly to see what appeals. I think I got the Hitchhikers Trilogy for free at one time as well. Beware of some of these, they are not always top quality stuff. Be selective.
Once you have your account, you just click and the book is yours. It's really simple. You can also read a sample of the book before you buy, which is a good thing, as well as the reviews from previous purchasers.

And, just occasionally, someone here on h2g2 will publish a book and let us know when we can d/l it.
I've bought one electric book and one dead tree book written by researchers here.

I'm almost halfway through the first draft of the second book
And redoing the website to be more promoting me as an author than just the first book

I keep forgetting to get your book*, on the other hand I have about 200 on my kindle (mostly the 99ct deal of the day, or free ebooks) waiting to be read. I think I've paid full price for about 10 since i got it (it was a present for my birthday 2 years ago, i wasn't really sure I wanted one until then)
I have the "old school" kindle keyboard 3G and it is brilliant. I read the first in a series of detective things and when I got to the end it was much too easy to switch on the wireless (i leave it switched off to conserve the battery) and get the next one...
You can also read PDF files and Word files (I haven't tried any other sort) which has been useful for my OU books. (although they do look better on a tablet with a Kindle app or a Kindle fire)
The only reason it was a Kindle was because Amazon (unfortunately) is the best source of English language books for me. has the fire and both are connected to the same account so we can share books.
*perhaps a thread "touting" h2g2 researchers' books might be good?

Regarding Project Gutenberg, they do Kindle versions of their free books. So you have two sources for free 'classics'. Having said that, I prefer to get mine from the Kindle store. Project Gutenberg books have a short bit at the start about the Gutenberg book, and a lengthy Project Gutenberg license at the end. These aren't a major problem, but I'd rather not have them.

Hi guys. Sorry I haven't replied to any of your comments but my internet access is very limited at the mo and I'm using it mainly for job searching. When I get a chance I will read all your replies- thanks for your input and thoughts.

I have a kobo. which I love. They tend to be cheaper to buy, have the same technology as kindle and a large choice if books to download.
