At least we get mentioned - http://hitchhikers.wikia.com/wiki/H2G2

Oddly though, http://hitchhikers.wikia.com/wiki/ZZ9_Plural_Z_Alpha doesn't mention the fan club, which seems a glaring omission.

I knew. It cropped up in a backlink check I did. smiley - winkeye

It's a fairly worthless mention, as far as it goes.

I'm sorry, I just am not a fan of Wikki, I have not seen anything original on their site for years, in fact last time I looked it was against their rules. They just smiley - pirate everyone else's hard work and pass it off as if it was their own. I would rather not see them messing with our domain. We were here first!

That's the problem I have with Twitter and Fazebook.
The medium is the message.

I understand that most hootooists are generalists and
tend to be progressive and quite likely to explore new
toys and means of expression but I resist anyone trying
to transplant this site to other platforms. If it ain't
broke and all that...

Yes, it is a gross generalisation to say that Twits and
Facers do not have the capacity to construct an entire
sentence, but I doubt any would even try to refute my
insistence on the relationship of medium and message.

I just had this image of a Twit trying to formulate a
complex witty pithy sentence - y'know, the kind we are
inspired to admire by our founder - in 140 characters.

People who write haiku usually have to use less than 140 characters. I think a pithy, interesting sentence could be constructed within that set of constraints. [Not that I'm volunteering to try to do so smiley - winkeye]

It's nothing new, jwf. Our grandparents were using telegrams to transmit all kinds of vital information in 140 characters or less (or maybe more if they were made of money smiley - winkeye ).

It's **A** wiki, Florida Sailor, not Wikipedia.

It is certainly just a fan site. All the entries in it seem to be Hitchhiker-related.

The link Geggs gave made me cringe for this alone:

>> It's members are known as Researcher's<<

Surely none of us would be so daring with apostrophes!

And anyway, it's not up to date. Says that we're run by the BBC.

"Yes, it is a gross generalisation to say that Twits and
Facers do not have the capacity to construct an entire

Game on.

We've had this conversation before. What you never understand is that if the medium was the message, nobody would use Twitter or Facebook. The message on these sites is, terrifyingly enough, the message.

The medium is the product. The medium is what allows you to communicate your message. On Facebook, the medium allows you to share photographs, news and messages with your peer group. On Twitter, the medium allows you to exchange views and links (to well formatted, interesting content without superfluous line breaks) with other interested parties.

These are good things. Humans connecting and communicating with each other is a good thing. Luddites trying to chop down the telephone poles (or, in this case, insisting that over one billion Facebook users can't construct a sentence) isn't going to change that.

But here's the kicker, jwf. Here's the bit that you need to engage with for your own continued sanity.

You. Do. Not. Need. To. Use. Social. Media.

Repeat that to yourself. Embrace that simple message. And then stop ranting about things you have no experience of or interest in, and let the rest of us enjoy our quick and easy communications.

And I can't let this one slide either:

"I just had this image of a Twit trying to formulate a
complex witty pithy sentence - y'know, the kind we are
inspired to admire by our founder - in 140 characters."

Erm.

The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't. - 75 characters

There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. - 138 characters

Brevity, jwf, is the source of wit.

Nice post!

The other point is perhaps that trying to follow all forms of social media might be tricky and/or pointless - pick the ones you like and don't sweat the rest?

They're not though, it's a fansite with information about the fictional universe, that's what Wikia does. They are not messing with 'our domain' at all.

If you thought that "It's members are known as Researcher's" was bad, just read on...

"The Edited entries go through a process of Peer Review by fellow Researcher's. Following comment's and improvement's by member's the article...."

I just don't understand why it doesn't say "Edited entry's" smiley - erm
