Salop is a revival of an old Norman contracted spelling of the name Shropshire.

Cantab (for Cambridge degrees) comes from the Latinised Cantabrigiensis, from Cantabrigia ‘Cambridge’.

Similarly, Oxon is the Latinised Oxoniensis (Oxford)
