Do you feel like an adult?

A few people around me have gotten kids recently. That has made me think about wether I would want any. Assuming I'd find a nice, friendly would-be mom. However I don't feel like I am an adult yet, and that I should wait for that to happen. However, perhaps that never happens. It seems a lot of people consider themselves not to be adults, but just pretending to be.
So have you ever reached a point in your life where you have felt that you have actually become an adult? I'm not sure I could define the term for you though.

At 53 I often don't feel much like an adult even though I do a pretty responsible job, own my own house and have 2 adult children.

I'm not really here Posted Feb 15, 2012
Only really in the last few years. Mainly because I've got to that stage where I know everyone in my town.
Well, obviously not really, but that seemed to me to signal adulthood because it's my dad always seemed to know someone wherever we went as kids. The first time it happened Teenacher was about 2 or 3 and I bumped into someone I used to work with in Norfolk. But I was too young then at only 26 or so.
The other thing is there is usually one or two people in the local paper I know, and people I know of are beginning to crop up in the obituary section. Not people of my generation, but adults I knew when I was a kid.
I can't deny it.
I'm a grown up.

As soon as you have kids, you become The Adult to them.

Not even nearly!
At the flicks on Monday watching The Muppets I was more excitable than any of the actual children there. Though I am increasingly thinking that no one is really an adult and others just pretend!

It's context-dependent.
Hand me a hammer drill, or a paraglider, or a climbing harness, or a PLC programming package, and I'm all seriousness, all grownup. I may make jokes, or be light-hearted, but I'm fundamentally in an adult, responsible, trustworthy and respectable state of mind and generally project such.
However... if you want to retain your respect for me, if you want to continue to see me as a responsible adult who can be trusted to operate an aircraft or a power tool, climb a cliff or program an industrial computer, then do not, whatever you do, under ANY circumstances ever hand me a lightsaber.

Hoo, that's a fab response. I think it's pretty much how I feel; I can Be A Grownup when the situation demands, but if it doesn't I can be as giddy as a five year old with a cardboard box.
I guess if life dictates that you have to be a grown up most of the time, that's the time you've probably an adult now (she says with a 12 day old baby strapped to her chest).

For a forty-two year old chartered professional who is a governor of a local school, I own far more lightsabers (and sonic screwdrivers...) than you might expect...

On the child thing...many's the man who's gone along with the idea but has only realised what a good one it was once he's seen them.

Like all men, I'm a responsible adult until confronted with a tea cosy. Show a man a tea cosy and regardless of venue, audience and usual demeanour, he will be forced to put it on his head like a hat.

Is it also a Billy Connolly observation? I don't like much of his stuff, but he's correct on the tea cosy issue if it is.
