Came across this quote by Theodore Dalrymple - "When I am a pedestrian I am frequently astonished by the carelessness and selfishness of drivers. Equally astonishing, of course, is the way I can change the behavior of people so profoundly by the mere act of getting in or out of a car."

That's the whole point. The box gives you a way to get up to non-wobble speed before some idiot is trying to overtake you. Cyclists can take off faster when the light turns than cars, generally speaking.
