I have had precisely one hangover. And I came down with a head cold the same day. That wasn't good, and is never happening again!

I started drinking at around 16, with a pal I went to scool with. We were drinking a beer called 'Long Life', the same beer that a TV character called 'Callan' drank.

When I went into the RAF, my real drinking took off, going really silly with it. I went onto a detatchment to RAF Luqa, on Malta. The regulars in the NAAFI drank Bacardi and Coke. Doubles cost 1/10d (less than 10p in todays money!). Iwas only there for a month, and on the last day there, I put away 24 doubles, and still managed to walk back to my pitspace!

Funnily, a lad challanged me to a drinking contest a few months later, just after I had been posted to RAF West Drayton, just outside London.

The lad let me choose our poison, the loser having to pay for it all. After a dozen, my opponent had had enough, and went to sleep at the bar. He was less than amused the following day that our 'contest' had cost him the thick edge of £50!
