A Conversation for Ask h2g2
What's Wrong With h2g2?
clzoomer- a bit woobly Posted Nov 25, 2011
I can't remember how many times or how long ago I've said this here but we represent ourselves by both nuance lacking text and by the readers' personal preconceptions. Personal and cultural differences aren't always as obvious as how to spell 'colour'.
That's why meets are so important?

Are 'meets' part of he problem.
There are people here on h2g2 that I would love to meet.
I choose not to make contact outside h2g2 because that may well spoil the illusion.
I know only one person here in real life. The person who held my hand and brought me here.

Skipping backlog:
THIS is what's wrong with h2g2, if anything. In ten hours, this thread has had 155 new posts. And this is always the way; within hours of them starting, threads like this rocket straight to the top of the busiest conversations.
We're wasting our collective energy on shite like this, and losing sight of what the site's here for.
That's what's wrong with h2g2.

How many of the current askh2g2 threads would you say is not "sheyete"? More specifically out of the twenty most recently posted to askh2g2 theads how many are pertinent in your opinion? (I am not sure myself).

I'm not passing judgement about that, sorry.
My point is quite clear, I think. Threads like this are constantly the busiest ones on the site - yet they are the ones furthest from what the site is all about. (If that's under any doubt, ask yourself this: Why would anyone set up a website for the purpose of talking about the website they are setting up? )

I wouldn't call them sheyete but I am guessing about 8 out of the first 25 on the list are pertinent according to the descripter of askh2g2.

I've made my point - this kind always races *straight* to the top.
So it doesn't need me to help it along.

An ignore button only works if
A)No one quotes the ignored person's posts.
B)People actually use the ignore button.
Sadly too many can't bear to think that there is a whole conversation going on behind their back..
Personally I think there is nothing wrong with hootoo apart from some people's impatience and the moderators having a very steep learning curve to get to grips with what level to moderate at.I suppose all the aggro will provide practice.
To be honest I had no real argument with how the Beeb did moderate hootoo apart from the not having political convos during an election which I thought was really unfair because it's our corporation and where else can we find such a public platform. That was my only real beef.
Anyway I think I'm going to become truly invisible for a while until all the flack has died down. There is too much prima donna behaviour from one or two and it's becoming tedious.

Coulds we give the prima donuts a badge of some kind to more easily identify them to us mere mortals?
Maybe we coulds make them king and queen of the site for a day. I'm sure they woulds be over the jupiter at that!!

It's very clear to me what's wrong with hootoo.
And I blame 2legs.

What's wrong with hootoo is all the people who can't be bothered to volunteer in any official capacity - we're not doing it for the power, you know! - but feel the need to complain endlessly about what the volunteers *are* doing. Anyone is welcome to join the volunteer schemes and help out behind the scenes. What we don't need is people making more work for us by questioning every single thing the volunteers do, and pretend there's some kind of conspiracy theory going on.
The people who are currently the volunteer team are the ones who cared enough to try to save the site, despite all the doom and gloom. They're the people who were willing to sacrifice their own personal lives and personal income to make it happen. You had your chance to join them. You *have* your chance to join them. The volunteer schemes are still open to join.
I repeat: everyone who's willing and able to do the work was welcome to join from the outset, and still is.
Everyone else, please go do something constructive, like write things people actually want to read, or help spread the word about the site, or make the hardworking volunteers a cup of tea. Just stop the endless whining about how you're not being listened to. You're like the people who try to ask an important question in the car, when the driver is concentrating on making a difficult turn.
I'm getting sick and tired of this, and personally, I don't think I'll be sticking around much longer if this is how it's going to be.

Pretty much what Mala said
Just stop the endless whining about how you're not being listened to.

>>An ignore button only works if

Only partially true. The 'ignorer' still enjoys not having to scroll down past the original post from the 'ignoree', so the site is still less noisy WRT to The Ignorer. And the absolute worst case scenario is still no worse than not having the button.
>>B)People actually use the ignore button.
Again, no worse than not having the button. But even if only a few people find a use for 'ignore', it can make things easier for everyone else, including The Ignored. Remember, it works particularly well when ignoring posters who you alone don't want to read, so it saves everyone else the bother of seeing pointless personal spats develop.

I have no complaints about how this site is run.
I do have complaints about folk who stamp their feet and behave like teenagers and become the problem rather than a solution.
Sometimes in a community one just has to realise that not everyone sees issues the way you do and that you might as well accept it and deal with things the way they are or just leave. No one is being forced to stay where they don't feel happy or part of the community.
