I'm a Newbie-in-waiting. Based on what you'll find on My Space, this is my third conversation post - I only joined today, which makes me a Newbie. However, this is my second account - I'm waiting for my old account to be transferred. Hence 'Newbie-in-waiting'.

Oh, and the last time I was a newbie was in 1997, or whenever it was that h2g2 was first launched.

Towards the end of August 2002 for me. Not quite sure of the exact date. I've been and gone a bit though, depending on circumstance.

Cheerful Dragon you mean 1999, not 97.
I'm one of the 99ers. 17 December that year.

That's three August 2002'ers so far. That must have been an unusually sticky month.

The problem was my ISP marking the response as spam, something I seldom check. According to my space, my page was created July 1999. That's not when I joined, just when I created the page.

But Lil... That's what I do.
I do what it says in the name!
I can't help it.
At least I don't press buttons.
And Rosie? Best way to get to know us is attend a Meet. I heartily recommend it. on my first, but attended all those I could since, including Hull.
And made some fantastic friends, in the UK and elsewhere.
I am just so pleased I spread my wings...

March 2000. I read a newspaper article in which DNA was talking about h2g2 and the process of writing a real guide, and I thought it sounded like something I wanted to get involved in. So I joined up, stayed for about a year and a half and in all that time wrote ... precisely nothing for the Guide. Which I like to think is at least true to the spirit of the original.
We didn't have ACEs back in thoise days, but I was welcomed by the legendary Joanna, whose virtual doughnut stall turned out to be exactly the right thing to tempt me to stay!

So I hear.
Anyway. I was a newbie in November 2003, but had been lurking the place for at least six months before that.

I can't believe that people lurk for so long before joining in! My fingers were itching to type replies from day 1.

I forgot to mention that I bought my first-ever home computer (a second-hand laptop) in November 2003. That probably explains it. Although I could browse a respectable BBC site in the office, actually joining up from the office would have been a definite job-loser.

I think I joined at some point in 2000, as a fresh-faced 21-year-old. Tracking down the exact date is probably more effort than I'm prepared to expend at this current moment, though.
I remember being ACEd by Crescent and writing some colossal gibberish in my early days, before settling down into getting drunk and spouting colossal gibberish in person at meetups.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Oct 26, 2011
I started talking on the internet using Usenet (a pre-Worldwide Web discussion forum) in late 1999.
But I couldn't find anywhere to publish Gnomon's Guide to the Galaxy until I stumbled across h2g2 by means of a link on AltaVista, the best search engine of the day, on 1st of September, 2000.
