Can you divide all people into two types? Men and women would be an obvious one, or young and old; perhaps even left or wing wing.

Of course, anyone mathematical says there are 10 types of people in the world, but there are also those who admit to picking their nose, and those who lie about it; those who read the Daily Mail, and those of average or above intelligence; and any others?

I think we do it because it's easier to have one logical dividing criterion. If we divided people into three types then we would actually need three criteria (what separates A from B, B from C, and C from A).

In a biological key classification, we can break anything into any number of types by repeatedly applying dichotomy.

Two types? Live and dead. There are shades of grey with other possible categorisations.

There are, of people, those who ride horses, and those that do not... all other divisions or attempts to catogrise the species by other means, are therefore, by default, less horse related than the simple horse division...

Does reading the Horse and Hound count as a simple division?

Yes, not only is it the easiest division to make, we are also predisposed to think in pairs because of our anatomy.

I once asked on the cheesecounter of a supermarket to have a third of a big piece of cheese; the guy serving had to call for assistance to work it out.
