That's why I said for volume 2...

Oh flick no, don't want anyone 'real' knowing I'm a stroppy, argumentative petty miserable trollope (that doesn't know already etc...)

So, it's looking like things are leaning towards *not* asking which name people want to use, am I right? It won't be difficult for me to get ahold of those that we already have permission from, since I already know we have contact information, or else we wouldn't have the permission. (In my case, of course, if anything of mine/that I've contributed to is chosen, the only difference between my real name and my h2g2 name is that, irl, I don't have the aka and everything after)

The only reason I mention it is because Matt asked spontaniously, and Spimcoot is getting an honest to goodness publishing deal for some of his other stuff. I'd only make the suggestion to the primary author of each entry. But, yeah, I am happy to go with h2g2 names for the lulu edition, and revisit that if we do either a Mark 2 with a real publisher or a Volume 2 on lulu.

I think real names detract from the purpose of this publication - we're trying to showcase h2g2, not individual authors.

If you allow real names you have to attach both, real name *and* h2g2 name. Because we want people to be able to h2g2 and actually find the people who wrote the entries, don't we?

... absolutely right Mala. It's the wrong place for real names.

You mean Tavaron da Quirm is just a nom de plume?

Interestman-
I liked very much the article: A guide to Olympic sports: Fencing, because I fence very much myself.
I also always appreciate a well-written article about a movie.

Hmmm movie reviews; how about Awix's column from the Post? The archive is at A693597 and includes some stuff from 2001. I just tried to pick a couple but I found I wanted to put them all up! If I have to pick one from 2001 though, it's A634484 - A Knight's Tale and Moulin Rouge. I like the way he compares them.

" Because we want people to be able to h2g2 and actually find the people who wrote the entries, don't we?"
As long as nobody ever changes their name, or they don't end up in an old skin where names don't show up if someone's changed it to that suffix thing...

It's such a treat having so much good reading listed in this thread.
I've now got my 42 pieces for the collection, with a couple knocking on the door to be let in if there's room, so keep the links coming for sharing good reading, but nominations are closed for (this edition) of the book.

So I won't go and ask folks
Names with Unumbers should take care of the "What if people change their names after publication?" concern, and just leaving off obvious tags should, too (as well as saving space).
Ben, there're a couple more permissions linked to in our thread, but they're probably not needed at this point, though one may be.

But Matt is my real name... promise.
(on an aside, if works are published, and a nom de plume is used, or screen name, how does one stand when it comes to legalities? ie: your work is used without your permission in the printed form, but you can't do anything because it's credited to a 'screen persona' - a non person...)

Oh, and I'm happy for a swap when it comes to Stephens Island Wren - I like the London Beer Flood Entry, but I think the other is more my own voice. I'm happy for a Volume 2 though.
BTW - I think this is a fantastic idea, I know DNA was alll for technology, but it's nice to take writing back to its grass roots and the idea of self publication to me smack of the idea of h2g2

Actually, there wasn't that much discussion . I wanted a balance of genres and topics, with no more than one by each author (though I did break that rule to make a couple of specific points about h2g2), and spread across the history of the site. But though I took suggestions, I made the final call myself.
I do think it's a cool idea though, and wonder why we never though of it before.... We should definitely do it again. Themed ones perhaps, the h2g2 guide to Alcohol, or America, or Science....

But we *did* run around and get permission from authors. Subs, too, where needed/possible.
