The BBC don't *care* That's the truth of it. I don't think some people here get that..but no worries there's plenty of people still in the UK do.

Nope, the BBC don't care, that's why they're selling us. But there are people in the BBC, individuals, who are being polite and helpful, and trying to be supportive. Ok they don't have the power to keep the site.

Very true, but 'free speech' is *fundamental* and if people are angry they should be able to vent and not get censored. Then they will quickly get over it, and move on...it's *just words*.

Free speech is dead in this country.

Free speech only works if people are willing to listen as well, otherwise it's just a bunch of voices shouting at cross purposes and nothing gets done. I will never, ever try to censor anyone or tell them what they can and cannot say, but if I believe they are being immature and generally going about things the wrong way I will damn well make that known!

If I'd known about Taff's night shifts before I may have been more sympathetic to his position, but it still stands that no good can come from his accusing the BBC of lying when he has no evidence to support that. I'm not defending the BBCs decision to "dispose of" h2g2, I'd just as soon they'd left us alone with our Brunels and Goos and cults and foibles, but (and I'm starting to feel like a stuck record now) ranting and spleen venting serve no useful purpose, even if they do make you feel better for a time.

Silly Willy

You are not entitled to free speech when posting to a message board owned by someone else. Hence the House Rules.

It is entirely appropriate that the BBC try to recuperate some money for h2g2 since they shelled out for it in the first place. And as a licence-fee payer, I encourage them to do so.

A lot of people seem to have forgotten that h2g2 was a commercial flop in 2001, and was *saved* by the BBC. We all owe them a great debt of gratitude for that. They are proving themselves again by not just pulling the plug this time, and for actually looking out for h2g2's future.

imagine what an entity like 606 would be worth if you stuck a side bar full of adds on it like facebook has????

yet the Beeb has just dropped it???

yet H2G2 with its smaller comunity of users, (but a large body of work) is being disposed of

disposed of, not sold off like any other type of asset, thats what makes me think its a done deal and tied to refurbishment!!!

Could someone at the BBC give me the name of the *human being* that designed them, then?

The House Rules were to a large part written, re-written, edited, argued
over, then re-written and re-edited mostly by h2g2 researchers.
(Based on a general rough draft of widely established values.)
smiley - ok
Oh, I recall arguing against smellong pistakes becoming a yikesable
offense. Sure enough it was soon agreed that even forriners would be
allowed to post with their own unique virgins of the Englitch langwitch.
They just couldn't post in their native language.
smiley - huh
Oh there were many laughs over that one.
smiley - somersault
But the East Anglian Babblefish won in the end.

It's safe to say every item in the House Rules was scrutinized by
and amended for those who spoke to the issues at the time.

Isn't SoRB largely responsible for the House Rules? His 'Modest Proposal' was the basis for them after a s*itstorm that threatened the website blew up and needed resolving.

The idea that the BBC doesn't care is nonsense: most of the BBC community websites were scaled down/closed last year/18 months ago while hootoo was given a reprieve and money for the upgrade. The entire MOT was done openly and we were given the chance to make our voices heard, while the BBC was under no obligation to do so.

They don't have to dispose of us either, they could have simply flicked the 'off' switch as they are going to do with 606 and other sites. Instead they're looking at ways to preserve DNA's legacy and our community and given us the chance to mobilise and get h2g2c2, which is looking more and more like a realistic rescue every day, going.

We're guests here and, instead of simply booting us out and changing the locks, the BBC is trying to find us a new home and giving us time to set up one of our own. Talk of them not caring is coming across as basest ingratitude.

It looks like the MOT was done to provide us with the best chance of,
being sold
being transfered
Or
being kept

It was not a waste it was an investment in the sites future. So lets hang on trust to luck and be ready to act if and when we need to.

Dont panic.........................................yet

I don't think an organisation can 'care' or 'not care' an organisatio is made of people, and those people can 'care' or 'not care'. I hear on the news that the NHS is 'uncaring' whilst it's actually just made of peoplel, all doing their best, mostly caring desperatly hard.
