What's the best band to come out of America?
dimples Posted Sep 17, 2000
Well Chicago Symphony has Daniel Barenboim which isn't really a big deal but his last name is a whole lot of fun to say.
Talking Heads. Definitely Talking Heads

...well of course The Beatles and the Stones were from the U.K darling! American music really hasn't "clicked" with me for various reasons...in order for a band to become large enough in America to get airplay over here it has to sell MILLIONS to the American public, and in order to do that it has to dumb itself down (hence Limp Bizkit, Blink 182, Green Day etc) to grasp the L.C.D. hence we have loads of turgid American crap clogging up our charts whilst the GOOD American stuff never gets heard.
...Anyway, I love Hole...and have on occassion been known to listen to Nirvana and (cringe) Pearl Jam, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays....I like Grandaddy and the Dandy warhols, they is good.

If you're refferring to the 90's I'd have to say Nirvana, even though I never saw them in concert.
But, overall... The Eagles have always made me feel that music is worth listening to.

Well, I live in America, so I get exposed to more of the good and bad (crappy music, thy name is Fred Durst) of Americans bands than those of you in Britain, so here's my short, incomplete list. I'd say the best American bands/artists are nine inch nails, Marilyn Manson, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, They Might Be Giants and has no one mentioned the Doors?? If someone has, I must have missed it. They definitely deserve a spot. As for British bands, I'm big on Zeppelin, Floyd, Radiohead and DJ Shadow's British, isn't he? I think so.

Sorry chuck, Queen were 3/4 English & 1/4 still being argued about although I think Freddie was born in Zanzibar to Indian parents, but I may be wrong.

I haven't had a chance to read all the threads of this forum, but has anyone mentioned anything prior to 1960?? I mean, come on, Duke Ellington and his Orchestra, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and the imcomparable Billie Holliday blow all the Metallicas, Nirvanas, Limp Bizkits, Britney Spears, etc. out of the water. These guys wouldn't know their &*% from their elbow without the blues and jazz. (In Britney's case she still doesn't...)
I saw Bob Dylan live back in March. He stood stock still the entire time and did not interact with his audience at all, something that should be important to any artist or musician. I kinda had to reevaluate my opinion of him...

This is going to be either contentious, or will go unremarked because noone knows them! But I really like Incubus: their lyrics are intelligent and well directed and their music is weird at first but develops...like a fine wine.

Hmm, they've always struck me as 'Chilli Peppers Lite'... I'm a big Fugazi fan, me. Perhaps not the Best Band To Come From America Ever Ever - but certainly my favourite. RATM and of course The Presidents of The United States of America are also contenders...

Sorry again, Spinal Tap are British, one of the actors, the one married to Jamie Lee Curtis, ? Haden-Guest was a Member of the House of Lords - until the reshuffle.

Have we had Woody Guthrie yet? He was just one person, but definitely deserves a mention.
I feel that Les Paul, one of few poineers of the electric guitar, needs to be included. Without him, we wouldn't have the Gibson Les Paul or the last 50 years of popular music as we know it.
The Dead Kennedys were cool too. Holiday to Cambodia anyone?

I didnt think Incubus were very chilli-ish though I like both, I thought the Incubus were heavier...?

Hmm, I think there's a definate Chilli's influence, especially in the bass department, and they have a similar kinda look too... of what I've heard, Chilli's are heavier, or at least have a stronger sound, if you see what I mean. Check out Blood Sugar Sex Magic for a full-on Chilli's sound.
With regards to Tap... they're a British band played by American actors (although I don't know if Guest is actually a Brit, I didn't think so anyway).
