Can anyone help me get my netbook back on the net?

Post 1

(I'm in Germany using an Alice wireless DSL router if that helps)

Netbook is an Acer aspire one and it can connect to the router but not beyond for some reason. Usually when I switch it on it connects automatically, but since this afternoon - I switched it off normally - when I switch it on it won't go on the internet.

My main PC is connected to the router by cable and is online. All flishy-flashy lights that should flish and indeed flash are doing so.

The netbook has Windows 7 which doens't have any "connect to the internet" instructions (in a conventional way like XP and Vista) that I can find.

Thanks!

Have you asked 2legs?

I think Windows 7 was his idea.

There is a signal between the netbook and the router, but for some reason it is pretending that the router isn't connected to the interweb. When it clearly is because I'm using it right now.

I hate technology (and sharing a PC which is why I'm desperate now smiley - grovel)

I just set up an HP netbook with Windows 7 for a friend and had no trouble at all connecting to my router via the wifi. You do have the wifi turned on, right?

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

we had a weird thing here a day or two back, of a simular nature; My netbook wouldn't hook up to the net.... lodger in front room, happily on the net smiley - huh router looked fine, all lights flashing or not flashing as they should....
No idea what the problem was, but it was fixed by unpluggin the router and the cable modem, waiting, turning modem back on... waiting, turning router back on... smiley - huhsmiley - erm
Someimtes Ihave to restart my netbook as the signal from the router downstairs seems to be less strong than one or more of the 2 or three doxen other routers I can pick up from my bedroom smiley - erm Or they interfer or something Idunno smiley - erm
I blame the government.... oh, we don't have one at the moment smiley - dohsmiley - erm

By the way, I wasn't being silly when I asked if the wifi was on. I remember Nog and I once taking his laptop into the shop and that was the problem.

This week I had a problem with all three laptops (and the netbook) going off line, then on again, then off. Finally called my server and they switched something-or-other and now they are all working fine again.

Like 2legs, I often do the unplug, turn back on routine and that sometimes works too.

Gosh, being awfully helpful, aren't I?

Done all that at least 6 times

the wifi is on and I can see that the netbook and the router are talking to each other - but in the diagram that shows the conection the bit between the router and the internet is not working.

Bloody sick of it. I changed provider because they promised a much faster connection which isn't true (and according to the tech who was here yesterday wouldn't be possible anyway because of the distance between me and the next DSL hub thingy)

I'll do it all again...

Buy a long cable and connect with that. We have WLAN but don't use it as it's not reliable. (Alice here, too).

embarassed to say that somehow all my internet access details had somehow been deleted and after a very patient young man took me through it (and I'd written it down for next time)

so now i'm back online wirelessly.
(Bel, connecting it with a cable isn't an option because I use it all over the house)
