Hello h2g2 smiley - smiley

h5ringer and I have collaborated on some Star Trek entries already and the next one to be written up is the Holodeck. We'd like your help with some suggestions of what you would do given the technology and a spare half-an-hour; (what happens on the Holodeck stays on the Holodeck) - but please, keep it clean, the best will be given author credit on the Entry.

Thanks in advance,

GB & h5ringer

Put all world leaders and others in positions of power into a re-enactment of the D-Day landings, Paschendale, an Afghanstani wedding about to be bombed and various other battles in the hope they think twice about invading other countries.

Of course, it wouldn't stop the religious nutbars...not sure what would but for relatively sane politicians...

Oh, mines easy.

I'd have a dressage lesson programmed and eventually I'd be riding a grand prix freestyle test to music. Canter Pirouettes, piaffe and all smiley - smiley

I'd have a general horse programme anyway. That's for sure.

Holodecks are dangerous, stay away from them. If you insist on using them, do not, never ever, try to live out fantasies. That would only make normal life the more frustrating. Imagine how sad it must be to be a superhero kind of being on the 'deck and then going back to cleaning sonic showers around the ship. You would end up looking like someone today who wastes his (yes, it is mostly men) days playing World of Warcraft or Second Life...* Use holodecks, instead, for recreational purposes.

I might go running through beautiful scenery, or hang out on beaches, or maybe perform music with a holoband or a holoorchestra - though this might come close to the fantasy thingy... Better have a real band/orchestra instead.

I think that, taking a holodeck in context, I would definitely use it for those things you cant have on a ship. Riding out through autumnal woods on a bright, cool day, coming out onto some dunes and then a good gallop down the beach... Followed by a gentle trot back across with the odd canter spot with a small log or two to hop over...

And maybe an idyllic picnic while I'm there.

And the odd camping trip...

Definitely for horse riding though! smiley - laugh

I agree with Robyn! Horses smiley - loveblush Didn't Picard have his own saddle in his ready room?

Realistically, I'd probably spend my time sabotaging it, though, to make room for a backup copy of the ship's vital systems. They never have a restore point...

And make a program that plays every time someone enters it, teaching things like the basics of circuit breakers. smiley - winkeye

Hey GB, you gotta include the DSN episode where an alien letch asked Quark to create a holodate with Kyra Nyres (sp?). She became suspicious when Quark tried to take a holo-pic of her and arranged that when the alien went into the scenario he found what looked like her body waiting seductively on a bed but it turned out to have Quark's head on it.

I think a superhero sim would be great fun, where I got the choice whether to be good or evil. Or a fully immersive version of Grand Theft Auto/Saints Row.

Have to be some sport.

Prog 1 - Playing in the World Cup-winning Scotland team of 2010 and scoring the final penalty in the extra time decider against Brazil.

Prog 2 - Playing in the Grand Slam Scotland Rugby team of 1990 and giving Will Carling the bird.

Prog 3 - Hang gliding over Glencoe

Moonhogg - Captain Coffee Break

Hang gliding over Glencoe... That sounds a good one. Drove through there 2 days ago, absolutely stunning!

My Holodeck progs?

1) Having my own dirt track for thrashing some old rally cars about.

2) An Ardnamurchan simulator. The peace, the beauty, the relaxed pace of life, and the stunning night sky. Not too realistic, though - no midges, and no rain. And the sea could do with being several degrees warmer. Just don't try to mess with the scenery though, you simply cannot improve on perfection.

My holodeck program would be indistinguishable from the environment on the outside of the holodeck.

It would even contain another holodeck, running the same program.

etc.

I believe it's spelled: Holo-addiction. And it's Reginald Barclay; "Reg" was just a nickname.
