My reflex action to hearing the Archers tune at just past 6pm of an evening is dash to the radio and turn it off.

If the Archers theme becomes the National Anthem I will be hunting for the off switch of Britian.

I think the National Anthem should be Always look on the bright side of life(de dum, de dum, de dum, de dum).

Spiderbaby - I was not saying that Islam endorses spousal abuse (any more than it endorses having women such as Bhutto as political leaders, with reference to the *whole* of what I said).

Not sure any religions actively support wife-beating, in fact. Amazing it happens at all, eh? My point was precisely that certain races aren't more or less predisposed to it, or to any other kind of bad behaviour.

I think it would alienate EVERYONE outside of Greater London if this was used as a *national* anthem.

London is NOT the epicentre of Great Britain, even if it is the Capital.

You don't get "Advance Canberra Fair" for the Aussies.

Precisely: thereby allowing a small proportion of the population to go all misty-eyed and assume their conception of nationhood to be the natural and unalterable one while everyone else feels excluded and confused and gets more and more resentful.

So, just like the current anthem, but with a better tune.
