G'Day all,
I'm starting this conversation to find other peoples opinions on what is the funniset movie of all time.
I say it's Life of Brian and here's why.
* The movie shows how ridiculous the differences between different religons is. "Follow the gourd" "No we must gather shoes in abundance".
* They take the piss out of commitees and prove why democracy doesn't work. "they're going to crucify Brian" "Right this calls for immediate discussion"
* The also tackle sexist attitudes that continue today.
"why can't women go to stonings?" "Because it is written, that's why!"
* Apart from the social commentary throughout the movie it has some of the most memorable lines ever. You can test this by simply yelling out "Welease Wodger!" as some one did at the 2005 Australian tennis open to Roger Federer which brought huge laughs from the elitist tennis crowd and even the commentators laughed.
So give your suggestion for the funniest movie of all time and please give reasons why.

It is difficult to argue against Life of Brian. I also really loved Spaceballs, but it doesn't manage to adress issues in the same way while being funny.

I'd say Dumb and Dumber. It made me laugh for a week, every time I thought of various scenes, I'd start laughing.
I got some VERY funny looks on the train that week.

"Welease Wodger!"
It'd be worth rewatching just for that
I don't think it rates as the funniest ever - although it is very funny in places, it's also uneven. It's been awhile since I watched it
Can't think of any really funny movies right now to be honest

Not seen it for aaaages!
I agree with kea though, it's good but patchy.
Didn't like spaceballs!
Funniest film ever?
I'll think about it.

If you want a Mel Brooks film in there then surely Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and The Producers are all Skyscrapers compared to the bungalow that is Spaceballs
Wouldn't disagree with Life Of Brian.
Very subjective discussion though. What makes some laugh turns others off blah blah...

Yes, far too subjective. Dumb and Dumber is probably the most unfunny film I have ever watched I rented it; laughed once in the first 20minutes (at a sight gag, near the start, of the van driving over the brow of a hill and the ears on the van flapping up and down) and then stopped watching.
I did enjoy Something about Mary and Kingpin so the directors do make films that make me laugh.

I think Dogma starts off as a very funny film, and is very close in theme to the Life of Brian but that fades drastically as it goes on....
A full lenght funny film!!!! tricky..... will get back to you on it!!

Gotta disagree with you there - I think K. Smith had totally lost it by Dogma. I am having trouble thinking of anything funnier than Brian though...

What was I thinking .....
I remember my favourite comedy " American Pie" classic
Dogma was ruined by Jay and silent bob ...... I think ... I think Chris Rock was brilliant though, and the early conversations are very very very funny.....

Dogma? What are you people thinking. I've seen goverment safety videos that were funnier.
Young Frankenstein was very funny as well. But like Spaceballs, it does require a certain knowledge of movies. Whereas Life of Brian seems to have more mass appeal.
Dumb and Dumber was great, rather subtle compared to most Jim Carrey comedies. But not funniest ever.

Life of Brian is my favourite Python film so therefore it ranks high among all comedies...
Funniest?... hmmm... I'm trying to think of which movie actually made me laugh out loud the most during first viewing...
The Gods Must Be Crazy ranks high by that criterium.
Strange Brew was good. (Shakespearian comedy if you haven't seen it. )
Caddyshack was excellent.
The original Airport. Lotsa laughs there.
A fairly recent movie that made me laugh quite abit was Supertroopers.
Cheech & Chong's first two movies are very funny.
For Kevin Smith movies, Clerks is still hard to top.. (shlerp, shlerp, shlerp THIRTY SEVEN s???!)
See... "Funniest Movie" and "Best Funny Movie" are different criteria...
Silly stupid humour can usually beat the crap out of witty and important social comentary for gut-busting laughter.
Dumb and Dumber doesn't rank... it's just stupid, not funny.

I'll have to stick up for Dumb and Dumber, I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to watch that because I thougth I hated Jim Carey.
After I'd picked myself off the floor after the first half hour I then returned for the rest of the film.
It is possibly the funniest movie I've watched for laughoutloudedness (a new unit of comedy? ). Naked Gun 2 1/2 also did this to me
Hoever, it doesn't really stand up to much rewatching. Unlike Life of Brian or Monty Python's Holy Grail.
Acutally I think one of the best comedies I've enjoyed over and over again - somewhat fittingly - is Groundhog Day. Has to count amongst Bill Murray's finest works (Ghostbuster is also a contender )

Don't get me going on Ghostbusters quite possibly my favourite humourous film.
"Dogs and cats living together"(superb ad-lib)
"Ray...When someone asks if you're a God you say YES!!!" (superb piece of advice)
Sigourney Weaver in that red dress (superb - nuff said)

Groundhog Day definitely ranks very high for rewatchability.
I once watched (tried to watch) Blazing Saddles on "The Family Channel"... No kidding! (They also tried to run Caddyshack... they had to add scenes to fill it out to two hours with very long commercials).
Talk about creative overdubbing... Why would a "family" channel even attempt to show these movies?
There was nothing left to laugh at except Mongo punching out the horse.
PETA would probably make them edit that out as well today!.
