at least come up with an original title to start the yank bashing
"americans are great, like whales in elasticated jeans"
there that do you
Americans are great.
Mugfungus Posted Oct 24, 2008
It's hard to take umbrage with Americans when one considers the fact that Cilla Black isn't among their number.
Cilla is not great.
Mu Beta Posted Oct 24, 2008
You're spelling's not very good, is it?
It should say 'Americans argue & eat'

Yeah, we wouldn't have such problems with my proposed change to a streamlined and homogenised way of spelling.
Still part of the fun of the present mish mash of conventions which make up the English Language is watching people make daft mistakes.
Since Iv'e proposed a way that English would be better I think its only fair that I suggest other improvements.
Americans are great but they'd be better if they choreographed all their sports. Ive watched baseball, basketball and American sub-standard football and must say that enterainng as they are on film and fun to play they are deathly dull to watch and need regular intermissions of adverts and "wardbrobe malfuntions" to make viewing bareable. Or if you are watching them at the venue regular walks to the concessions stands to prevent the onset of DVT.
Why dont they just make every game into a scripted and rehearsed victory for the underdog over seemingly insurmountable odds?
PS. Why are they called concession stand when everything seems to be full if not over-priced
Cilla is not great.

Too weird. They do seem to like golf though. Weirdos.
Cilla is not great.

>> PS. Why are they called concession stands...<<
On the off chance that you really want to know and weren't just trying to make an otherwise fully justifiable remark about the ridiculously high prices charged by all 'concessionaires' at all sorts of venues (sports, theatre arts, cinema,):
The right or license to sell foodstuffs and/or other products is awarded by the owners of the venue and/or the copyright holders of certain 'logos' and 'brands'. In a way, they temporarily 'concede' their right to be sole purveyor by conveying temporary rights to others, here-after known as concessionaires.

I'm an American, and from what I've seen, only the rich and the elderly like golf. And most of us only use golf clubs to hit the rich and the elderly.
And "weirdos"? Well, we might be, but you still don't have to put it so bluntly...
Cilla sings the rainbow.

Take it as a compliment, I do!
Cilla is great, and so are Americans.

I love 'em, I love the friendliness, I love the sunshine, I've watched a lot of american movies in my youth.
I'd go on holiday there every year if I could, and would work there for a while too if the stupid country would let me have a visa!
Cilla is great, and so are Americans.

Indeed, the US wins about 75% of Nobels in chemistry, physics, physiology and medicine and economics.

Britain & France monopolise the Nobel Awards for whining.

Hi lunar quiche, I see you are quite new to h2g2, so welcome,
Yes we, (Brits) do tease a bit sometimes; from my own point of view though it is mostly affectionate. I think of Americans as cousins. We do mock ourselves as well though, but I won't put Brits down though like some. Our whining stats are unfortunately a bit skewed by some other cousins, living in the funny bit at the top of Britain, where the men where skirts covered in pretty geometric patterns..
And I also very much support Obama, who I see you are rooting for, from the Obama/McCain thread.
And I actually quite like golf, I have to admit, and am considered a bit weird for it.
Let's make sweeping generalisations about huge numbers of people again!
Secretly Not Here Any More Posted Oct 26, 2008
All 305 million USAnians are great/fat/arrogant/bereft of irony.
All 60 million French are arrogant/snooty/ride bikes and wear onions.
All (x) million (y) are blah blah blah blah.
Is it a hootoo law that we have to have one of these threads every few months?
Let's make sweeping generalisations about huge numbers of people again!
Xanatic Posted Oct 26, 2008
I think this thread was more about trying to stem the tide of anti-americanism which is so fashionable these days.
Let's make sweeping generalisations about huge numbers of people again!
lunar-quiche Posted Oct 26, 2008
Thanks, ffreEs, good to meet you. If I could make a sweeping generalisation about huge numbers of people for a moment, I'd like to reassure you that the British aren't the only people who regularly make fun of themselves. We do a lot of that, too-- if we didn't, we'd have bashed in our collective heads by now. And there's one more sweeping generalisation to be made: I believe, and of course I'm right, that h2g2 is simply the best. And anyone who can prove otherwise will be promptly ignored.
