What IS "American Cheese"?? Just thought I would ask - is it like Cheddar for instance?
While you are all pondering that, my favourite lunchtime thing is my own invention of Chicken pieces, Ceasar Salad dressing, pinenuts, rocket and then finished off with some grated Parmesan on Ciabatta bread. A kind of Ceasar salad to go, but dead scrummy.........

The only USAian cheeese is muck called Monterey Jack which makes the Rumsfeldtian French jibe so much more inaccurate. As in so many things they have no taste.

It's that kind of processed square slice of cheese, not entirely dissimilar to a slice of bright yellow latex!

Yes. that's it... It's a soft bland cheddar if you're lucky...
Or it could be something labeled as "Pastuerized Process Cheese Food"
You think I'm kidding...

I have discovered that there are three subjects that will *always* be taken seriously on h2g2 - food, sex and the meaning of life. Shows that h2g2ers have got their priorities right.

used to be a sandwich shop near my place of work which did thick white bread with grated cheese and mayo, peanut butter, raisins and chopped celery - - sounds disgusting but was heavenly

When I was little my mum and I would make these fantastic sandwiches, grated cheese, grated carrot and mayo. Cheese and mayo just doesn't quite work.
When I was a bit older I was introduced to salami and cream cheese, but you have to get the proportions right.
And as far as toasties are concerned it has to be cheese and ham in a proper toastie machine, the one with the scallopped patterns and you have to butter the outside to stop it sticking.
Though some people I knew at college would swear by our toastie bar's marshmallow, mars bar and nutella toasties. I could never see it myself.

Two thick slices of white farm house loaf.
On the bottom a thin layer of butter covered with an even thinner layer of English mustard.
On thick slice of nice ham (wiltshire or such like).
Enough sliced polish weijeska sausage to cover the ham.
A couple of slices of peppered salami.
Emmental Cheese sliced.
Loads of black pepper.
Half a ripe tomato sliced.
4 Green olives sliced.
One chopped Challote.
Cucumber.
Lettuce.
Thousand Island dressing on top.
...
In fact this is what I had for lunch today.

The official recipe (according to fanzines) for Lister's Triple Fried Egg Chili Sauce and Chutney Sandwich in Red Dwarf:
Take two pieces of big sliced bread and pop them in the toaster.
Fry three eggs in a half a pat of butter. You don't need to salt them.
On each slice of toast spread large amounts of a good Indian Chutney
Then after layering the fried eggs and chili sauce add copious amounts of Asian hot chili and garlic sauce.
Drinking milk, juice or lager may prevent serious damage but you have to eat it before the bread disolves.

This is my version of a toasted cheese sandwich, (the only verion I can eat on my low-fat diet).
Toast 2 slices white bread in toaster, spread one with low-fat cottage cheese and the other with tomato ketchup, then pile high with 'turkey ham' and squige together. Sounds vile but actually quite yummy and almost feels bad!

My bread of choice is a tortilla - not *technically* a sandwich, but tasty, and quick. I like all kinds of things on them ... pb&j, classic ham & cheese, cottage cheese & lemon curd, whatever else I have lying around in the frige...
Quesadilla:
One large tortilla
Shredded Cheddar
Shredded Montery Jack (not meant for sandwiches, btw, but for cooking)
Mix cheeses, sprinkle thickly on tortilla.
Nuke in micro for 1 minute.
Fold in half, wait until temp of cheese is lower than magma, eat.
Ultimate Quesadilla Add-ins
Sprinkle on before folding in half:
Salsa (spicy tomato-pepper spread)
Avocado slices
Bacon, ham, chicken, prawns, sausage, etc...

My top three (including a 'sweet' sarnie)
Granary roll, avocado, buffalo mozzerella, tomato, basil.
Soft brown bread, extremely good ham, tomato.
Thin sliced white bread, greek youghurt, strawberries, pepper.
Yum
Ooh - nearly forgot the salmon and cream cheese bagel. :D

Thick pre-cut plastic bread, 4 fish fingers, fried egg, cheese and optional tomato sauce. Best consumed at about 2am whilst still drunk, with a cup of sweet tea....Ahhh, the memories....
