What's the Golden Rule?
Beatrice Started conversation May 8, 2008
Was at a (rather excellent) course this morning, being given by an enthusiastic American. At one stage he asked the audience
"What's the Golden Rule?"
expecting there to be both consensus and a somewhat instant reply. Which there wasn't.
So, what's YOUR definition of The Golden Rule?

People generally say the Golden Rule is that there are no Golden Rules.

Never volunteer!
Never stick your head above the parapet.
Wear clean underwear everyday.
That whatever can go wrong WILL go wrong.....eventually.

My understanding is that The Golden Rule is "treat others as you wish to be treated yourself".
Which is a load of cobblers, and it should be obvious why. For instance, I would wish to be treated as unbelievably sexually attractive. However, when I've attempted to treat others that way, it's not worked out too well. I'm sure we all have our little foibles in the way we'd LIKE to be treated that wouldn't translate to the treatment of other people.

I'm liking these!
"Don't get caught" was one of the answers volunteered by the audience, as was "Whoever has the gold makes the rules" .
I thought it was something to do with the amount of public borrowing not exceeding something else...
But the answer he was after was SORB's , before going on to amend it to The Platinum Rule:
Do unto others as THEY would have done unto themselves
(ie don't assume everyone has the same wishes and goals as yourself)

the 11th commandment is
"thou shallt not get caught"
as to rules
never take cover with someone braver than you,
friendly fire is more accurate than hostile fire,
anything you do can get you shot...including doing nothing,
your weapon was made by the cheapest bidder

Isn't the Golden Rule that stick made of gold somewhere in Paris that's used as the statutory definition of one metre's length?
What's the Golden Rule?
swl Posted May 8, 2008
Except the one in Paris isn't gold. It's the Platinum & Iridium Rule.
What's the Golden Rule?
sigsfried Posted May 8, 2008
and it isn't the definition of the meter anymore.
