food philistines

Over on Robyn's Food Snobbery thread F19585?thread=5048652 I posted a link to the White Trash Cookbook (yeah I know, but there was already thead drift going on...)

http://whitetrashcookbook.com/category/uncategorized/

Afterwards I started wondering if inside every food snob there also lurks a food philistine with a shameful secret desire.

So, what do you eat only when you think nobody is watching?

Malabarista - now with added pony

Blätterkrokant - a kind of German brittle toffee with hazelnuts.

I'll eat it normally - but when nobody's watching, I peel off the chocolate with my teeth and then the brittle layers one by one smiley - blush

And of course nobody must know about my eating-frozen-peas-and-corn-straight-from-the-bag habit smiley - winkeye

Prersonally, either a Miss Millies' megabite, a burger king double whopper with cheese and bacon or my current favourite:

Belgian chocolate truffle cheesecake with a dark choc ganache topping...

Oh, and I LOVE cheap buffet food! Those horrible breaded chicken drumsticks are just so delicious!

I also adore, on the odd occasion, a bit of home-made chocolate dessert. A spoonful (or two...) of soft butter or marge, some cocoa, some sugar, stir in properly (and adjust the ratios to suit), eat slowly in front of the telly... smiley - smiley The crunchy bits of sugar are so good with the rich buttery chocolate...

One of those savoury things they sell in Greggs - the puff pastry folded over a slice of streaky bacon and covered with cheese....I always regret it afterwards though. Could be worse, my Dad used to eat sugar sandwiches smiley - ill

Mmmmm... fried egg sandwiches with HP sauce. smiley - drool

I also love Doritos, and of course Orville Redenbacher's smiley - popcorn

Probably the one food item that grosses me out the most (but that I love anyhow) is chip butties made with buttered white bread, the chips sprinkled with malt vinegar. Luckily they don't have those here in Spain, and they're never the same when you make them at home (believe me, I've tried).

I was having a look through the White Trash Cookbook and came across a recipe that my mother used to make when we were kids - we loved it!

I've never had a scotch egg. What's gross and shameful about them?

Ah yes.

And Pork Farms ones are nasty.

I like theo nes from the farmer's market. Jelly and lumps opf actual pork meat instead of that weird chump you get in the 'service station' ones...

Years ago, when my wife and I were just married, we were broke. Seriously broke. The only money we got was from me labouring on a farm and the fortnightly craft fairs where we sold stuff we made. The craft fair money was our little luxury so we would spoil ourselves by buying a small pork pie each, a packet of crisps and a bottle of cola which we would eat on the way home.

We still occasionally talk about "spoiling ourselves" with pork pies & crisps.

But I'll take the chip butties, and "traditional" British sausages.

In cold weather I sometimes get the craving for chocolate fudge cake and similar delicacies.
