Susanne - if it ain't broke, break it!

welcome to your life-
there's no turning back now

tears for fears, everybody wants to rule the world
(and how true's THAT)

This one always gives me a little shiver:

Stood still on a highway, I saw a woman
By the side of the road
With a face that I knew like my own, reflected in my window
Well she walked up to my quarterlight
And she bent down real slow
A fearful pressure paralysed me in my shadow
She said 'Son, what are you doing here?'
My fear for you has turned me in my grave
I said mamma I've come to the valley of the rich, myself to sell
She said 'Son, this is the road to hell'

Susanne - if it ain't broke, break it!

and the one that perfectly describes my situation...

champagne lingers in my glass, party's over.
I see my reflection sipping, and it reminds me-
I'd like to see you having more fun.
I look around and it's me I see...

God said to Abraham, 'Kill me your son'
Abe said, 'Man, you must be puttin' me on!'
God said, 'No!'.
Abe said 'What?'
God said, 'You can do what you wanna Abe, but
Next time you see me comin' you better run.'
Well Abe said, 'Where d'you want this killin' done?'
God said, 'Out on Highway 61'

Highway 61, by Bob Dylan
(Too much time on the God thread, I think..)

Not reading the backlog, too much to do, but the best opening two lines ever are surely:

"She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at St Martin's college"

From, of course, Common People by Pulp.

A perfect attention-grabber, a mini-synopsis of the whole song, and sung with the ideal mix of bitterness, yearning and panache.

Cohen again.

The ponies run, the girls are young,
The odds are there to beat.
You win a while, and then it’s done –
Your little winning streak.
And summoned now to deal
With your invincible defeat,
You live your life as if it’s real,
A Thousand Kisses Deep.

When I look back upon my life, it's always with a sense of shame,
I've always been the one to blame.

Oh, you can mine a rich seam with PSB...

I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money

I came across a cache of old photos
And invitations to teenage parties

Another night with open eyes
Too late to sleep, too soon to rise

Think about the love inside the strength of heart
Think about the heroes saving life in the dark
Climbing higher through the fire, time was running out
Never knowing you weren't going to be coming down alive
But you still came back for me
You were strong and you believed

-Believe, Yellowcard.

As I walk through this wicked world searching for light in the darkness of insanity,
I ask myself is all hope lost, is there only pain and hatred and misery?

dna level c, somewhere in cyberspace, about 40 miles from reality

Been thinkin' on this a couple of days. The one song I keep coming back to in my haid is my all-time favourite Beatles song:

"There are places I remember all my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better, some have gone and some remain"
- In My Life

I also like songs that start out painting a picture. Here are a couple from the American country music genre, since that is one of my favorites:

"Three thirty in the morning, not a soul in sight,
The city's lookin' like a ghost town on a moonless summer night"
- Thunder Rolls by Garth Brooks

and

"Big orange ball sinkin' in the water,
toes in the sand, couldn't get much hotter.
Little umbrella shaped margaritas,
Coconut oil, tan senioritas"
- How Forever Feels by Kenny Chesney

last but not least:

"Oh how you sparkle, and oh how you shine
The blush on your cheek is more than the wine"
-You Look So Good In Love by George Strait

It all began when they took me from my home and put me in dead row,
of which I'm nearly wholly innocent of, you know...
