Well actually ~jwf~ my little place looks out onto the spendid Georgia Straight which seperates me from my beloved Vancouver Island, which comes complete with majestic mountains covered with snow half the year. I guess you're thinking of the Pacific Rim Park on the west of that island with it's dozens of kilometers of continuous white sand beaches that face the wild, open Pacific. Easy mistake to make.
Sorry, I have to sleep now in order that I can catch the magnificent sunrise over the mighty Fraser river.
Oh and Rev, my kids are coming to visit me this weekend to try and impress on me how rich they are (and money isn't the least bit involved). One designs jewellry and has done that and lived in Taiwan for four years. One lives in a tour bus here in Canada and sells masks she designs. One just took a lengthy course in a temple in Thailand in order that they might be qualified to teach and practice Thai massage. Personally I find myself rich even paying for the expensive life here.

zoomer,
Your kids sound wonderful and very independent and creative. I'll bet you even learn a thing or two from them at times.
hi Jack Russell,
I don't - and have never - lived my life by the things you are talking about. I am probably more like one of zoomer's kids in this sense. No mortgage, no car (not since I was 25 - now I am 47), and certainly no ever comparing myself to my neighbours. Most people my age have way *more* (materially speaking) than I do, but this is not a concern of mine.
My concerns are my own, quite personal, not really having to do with age but more with having a quality of life I have always wanted. It *is* weird sometimes to think that I am soon going to be 50 and I'm not sure what this means, to be honest. When I turned 40 I was supposed to have some sort of 'crisis' but this failed to happen. Perhaps when I turn 50? Though I have to say my only crisis moments are when I have to pay the rent and the bills.
Maybe if I wasn't stuck worrying about this all the time I could have a *proper* crisis???

>> I can catch the magnificent sunrise over the mighty Fraser river. <<
Your kids sound like a joy.
Sometimes it's necessary to challenge people's values to get them to reveal what really matters to them. Of course I envy anyone who can afford to live on the west coast of Canada, the same way the English envy the Mediterranean French and Spanish. But I'm glad I got a rise outa ya and that my BC-bashing managed to yank all that other info outa ya.
In truth, I took an early morning flight from Vancouver to Nanaimo as the only passenger aboard a ten passenger twin Otter. When the sun rose behind us the pilot and co-pilot both turned to look at me thru the open cockpit door and said, "Hope you don't mind if we do a slow 360 turn. This sunrise is just too beautiful to miss."
It was. A huge and glorious redness spilled over the Rockies and down the Fraser Valley, flooding the Geogia Straight and illuminating the log rafts and tankers plying their way thru the whirlpools. Nanaimo glowed. And so did we all.
