Beg pardon? That metaphor went over my head with a gentle woosh.

I was thinking of the line "all pants no trousers" but substituted apparel for christmas dinner fare.
It made sense in my head when I thought of it.

What Lewis was going for was a book about Christianity. Not Orthodox, not Catholic, not Anglican, just the basic principles.
Only then he starts from human nature and argues for the existence of God, which is an odd place to start. Most proponents of 'basic Christianity' would probably start with "So there was this guy in Palestine, right, and he was pretty awesome..."
(I'm not familiar with the 'all pants no trousers' metaphor, either. Pants as in underwear, or pants as in trousers?)

I'll leave now.
I erred massively
It's 'All mouth no trousers' I was thinking of (Where did 'pants' come from?? )
I think I'll just quit while I'm behind....

Clive and making sense were uncomfortable bed fellows.
To take the metaphor further, they had organised separate beds, slept in opposite ends of the house and didn't speak to each other at breakfast.
Put down what you are doing and watch this instead....

Thanks Clive. Sounds reasonably broad, then. Will give it a shot. At some point.
Mere Christianity... Thanks Turnsup, now you've put that idea about 'fake modesty' into my head, it'll be there forever, ever time I see the book's spine.

I was Umming and Ahhing about whether or not I could get away with ordering this for Christmas, provided I bind it in sack cloth and ashes and promise not to read it over dinner, maybe.
But this standard of essay has certainly persuaded me to get a copy.

Sounds like special pleading, probably is.
Reminds me of the kind of question the preoccupies the kind of fundamentalist Christians who run rapture ready and agonise over who will be in the pre-tribulation governments like "why isn't america mentioned in the bible?"
Of course the messiah of the Jews came to Glastonbury to further his education in Greek and Roman thinking.
