This is why I love this site. I too have mental pictures of everyone who has so far replied and would trust them all in striking distance of my woodpile. Thanks for making me laugh on what is otherwise a grey and overworked morning.

I'm quite happy talking to people on here. I think it probably could be true that the more "dodgy" the website, the more dodgy the identity of the person - here I don't care who knows who I am, I say nothing on here I wouldn't say face to face.
I have been known, in the past, to visit some of the, shall we say, less reputable chat sites, where I have been someone completely different. As I would most likely never speak to anybody on there ever again, I didn't feel the need to be able to keep it up for several years. Let's just say they weren't talking to the real me. Or were they...?
Anyway, on here, I'm who I am. And I'm happy to chat to anyone. Through the net, I can talk to people who I would never have a chance to meet, around the world.
Let's face it, there is nowhere in my normal day to day life that I would be able to meet the likes of ReddyFreddy (D.Perv etc), Roymondo, SWL, Airscotia and all the other regulars. My life is all the happier for it!
Maybe this isn't DNA's original idea for H2G2, but surely he'd have been happy with the community he's inspired?

Well, here you can be whoever you want to be... and i think, most notice in some time it's easier to be yourself, so i'm fine with it...
And yeah, i'm a new guy..

Perfectly happy talking online to people I've never met in real life... I can generally tell within a few posts whether someone is an ace-hole and/or pretending so I try to avoid those people unless I get dragged into an argument with them. I love a good argument, especially with people who can't see the bigger picture.

Don't you find that it's the most arrogant people that assume that only they can see the bigger picture?

'ere Pinky,
I haven't got an axe to grind, but I do have several big pointy knives that could do with sharpening. Can you do those?

I dont know if I'd change a thing tho - just thinking about the years before RL vrs Online - I would never have had the oppourtunity to "meet" and meet such incredible people, or have access to their insights. So if the occasional loonie is hanging off his pc hunting for victims, it balances with all the global sharing and inspiration that goes on.
Met one chap in RL that I had known for a while online and he was just like his net-self. I think the more centred people are the more they can just "be" - in any format.
Seeing a comment from someone whose mind I really apreciate always makes me smile - its reassuring to know that there are all these "others" out there dealing with the same / simular issues as all of us - even the wonky ones are just getting through their stuff. Its all good (and yeah, dont go meet people in quiet places or give out too much info etc - but those are just survival tactics of the 21st C)

I've met some bloody great people through this site, some of 'em have become RL friends (2legs, Reddyfreddy, Serephina (oi woman! we need to finish the JD, if it's still there), and some I wish would turn up in London for a drinkie! Whether they do or not I'd never have met 'em without this place and I love their company. If people can make you laugh, make you think, make you reconsider your opinions, and post barely disguised smut you now you're in the company of good people.
I also met some good people on the Glastonbury forums in 2005. I was initially going to camp with 'em but ended up camping with the old Thanet bunch (as usual) but I did hook up with 'em for a few (alright, for a lot of) pints of cider and they were exactly as they appeared online.
Yeah, there are weirdos out there, but there are also some fine, fine people.
And it's great to be namechecked in a thread!

There has been the odd dodgy person on hootoo but the majority of people here are genuine and witty and it's a great place to cheer you up when you feel down. I've made some great friends over the years. If you don't speak to people you don't know..how do you make new friends?

There are some great people on here and most seem more genuine than some of the characters I've met on other sites I visit.
Because of this I'm probably more like my real self here too.

I can speak for myself and those that I've met that myself and those that I've met are pretty much who we are on here.
Apart from Reddyfreddy.
Reddyfreddy is *much* pervier in the flesh.

In order to preserve the (limited) dignity of those in question:
But if you've got photos I'm sure we'll be able to put up a fair 'incentive' to avoid 'em going public.

Was this the barely disguised smut I've read so much about? Because I've been looking everywhere...
In the mean time, I don't know there is such a thing as the 'real' you. I am different with different people, depending upon the environment, how well I know them, what they are like etc...
I am in many ways very much like 'many-faces' from the old He-man cartoon.

Actually, I am the real me when I'm in my own company. There's no deliberate pretense in other company, it's just one reacts to the circumstances.

Ermmm, now I'm not sure Thatprat ! I've only tried out axes on my new oiled machine..Ok,pass them over here, what's a few pointy knives between friends eh ? I agree Roymondo, people react to different subjects in different ways.Fortunately,in h2g2,there's always someone to come along and lighten anything that appears to be getting too heavy.I like that!
