Re: It's 'orrible being in love...
Having mentioned this thread to my wife, she suddenly became excited on hearing this song being mentioned.
I have now had to download it for her.
I agree. It is c**p!!

I do hope you shamed your wife into admitting to all her friends that she was "excited" about hearing such a remarkably dreadful song.

Postman Pat
Ken Barrie
(It got to Number 44 in 1982)
I was the winner of a Postman Pat album (YES - THE ALBUM!) and a set of stamps for a local paper competition in Milton Keynes.
I was only 7.
In fact, I don't even think that allows for an excuse.

I recall that it jumped on the one for the Vicar. Ahhh the heady days of vinyl.

A few from the musicals:
The Candy Man Can Charlie & Choc Factory
What A Lovely Lonely Man - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
And in Sound of Music when the kids are singing 'Few of my favourite things' and Julie Andrews suddenly joins in as she's running towards them. Makes me cringe a cringe I rate a 'full double buttock'.

And from another musical: "Tomorrow Belongs To Me"
Actually a good tune (and especially the orchestration) for the young Nazis in "Cabaret", and well composed for that purpose. So "dreadful" by design. IMHO.

BTW, I am a fan of neither musicals nor Liza Minelli, but both were good in this case (1972 movie). Along with the great performance by Joel Grey. I do have the soundtrack (on vinyl), and play it sometimes. "Willkommen, bien venue, welcome ..." (not sure on the spelling).

"Willkommen, bien venue, welcome ..."
I thought that was from Blazing Saddles.

I don't remember it being in "Blazing Saddles" ... it did have that famous work song from the cotton fields, "I Get a Kick Out of You" written by Cole Porter.

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like Posted Jan 22, 2007
It's entirely possible that it's in Blazing Saddles, but if it is, it's a direct reference to Cabaret.
I'll think you'll find that 'Tomorrow Belongs To Me' (better known as the Horst Wessel Song, after a young Nazi who died in the 'Munich Beer Hall Putsch' of 1923) is utterly genuine. Though i imagine that the translation of the lyrics may be liberal to make the English scan the same as the original German.

Just to clarify...
It IS in Blazing Saddles, and it IS a spoof of Cabaret-cum-Marlene Dietrich in the Blue Angel.

More or less what I'd assumed. Especially given the fact that Caberet would have just won a best picture Oscar when Blazing Saddles was being shot.

For buttock-clenching cringes induced in the triplet categories of lyrics [in their own right] lyric 'rhyming' and ungainly harmony----
Ebony and Ivory
Live together in perfect harmony
side by side on my piano keyboard,
Oh Lord
Why can't we?
How about 'cos you can't ing well sing together?

Wistful memories of Bill Bailey;

They don't fight
Cause they're not very good at it."

Stray Cat Strutt
I recall they looked like a cheap version of an under-funded AmDram version of Guys and Dolls.
I also recall they used to "guest" on 3-2-1.

Hmm, the stray cats looked like a punk version of Grease.
An cheap am-dram version of Guys and Dolls would be someone like Blue Rondo a la Turk. No rockabillies in Guys and Dolls, but lots of zoot suits.
Besides Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats became a one man channelling station for the spirit of Eddie Cochran, so I'm inclined to forgive him anything he did with Slim Jim (he married Britt Ekland, you know) and the others.
Key: Complain about this post
