In that case you might want to talk to the person who posted to your home page in this thread... F1728018?thread=373561
They seem to be of the impression that they're your Mum!

THATS IT!!!
A Super Furry Animal Posted Jan 30, 2004
How can I put this?
Instead of trying to set up help groups all the ing time, why not just try and *talk* to people, get to know you way around, mingle a bit (there's several bar and cafes you can join in with)...why this terrible urge to think you know how to help people, when you so clearly don't have a clue? I mean, I've been here over a year but wouldn't presume to have your arrogance.
THATS IT!!!
@Unofficial Site Assistant (USA)@ Posted Jan 30, 2004
As I've said...
I dont care what people say, I'm keeping the help group!!
THATS IT!!!

"I dont care what people say, I'm keeping the help group"
Ok, but don't you see a small discrepancy in what you're saying here... If you don't care what people are saying then how can you be wanting to help them...?
There are a lot of people who've spent time and energy trying to help you... Sure, you can help other people... no-one's stopping you, but it would be wise to accept the help and advice of more experienced users around the site... after all, it's easier to help other people if you've some grounding in the site...
THATS IT!!!
@Unofficial Site Assistant (USA)@ Posted Jan 31, 2004
What I mean by 'I dont care what people say' I mean nothing anyone say's is going to stop me from doing what I want to do.
Maybe if everyone would accept that there is a new help group, it might run better..
And remember, when/if people join, they will have more experience, and will be able to help.
If there is a question I dont know the answer to, I can always find the answer for them, or ask an ace, guru, sub,,etc...
I dont want any trouble, just to help.. whats so wrong with that?
and dont say nothing, because I've had loads of messages saying I cant help, and that I'm not allowed to.. to be quit honest, I think the current help groups are scarred it will take all there years of work away, well it wont, I want to work along side them, helping newbies and maybe even finding new things out myself.
I'm not saying I know more than anyone else, but I do want to help, and so thats what I'm trying to do... If people will accept my help group and not send nasty sarcastic messages to me.
THATS IT!!!
A Super Furry Animal Posted Jan 31, 2004
Well, the best way to help is not to come storming in like gangbusters thinking you know better than everyone else. You've been here 5 days. The people who offer help around here have been here for 5 years. You do the math. You're p*ssing people off. Not a great way to offer help.
THATS IT!!!

"I've had loads of messages saying I cant help, and that I'm not allowed to.."
Could you point out a message telling you that you are not allowed to help please?
"To be quit honest, I think the current help groups are scarred it will take all there years of work away, well it wont, I want to work along side them, helping newbies and maybe even finding new things out myself."
No, the current helpers don't like being impersonated... which got a few backs up to start with... however, I can't see any problems with you helping folk... as long as you do it properly.
A few hints...
1) Do not unsubscribe from any message - you never know when someone will be asking for help...
2) Make sure you are subscribed to any entries you create - no point in asking people to post a question if your personal space doesn't show you when they do.
3) Stick with it... Changing names is just going to confuse people... If a newbie is greeted by a Porter, then clicks on a link and finds themselves looking at a 'Junior Ranger' or whatever, they're going to be more confused than ever.
4) Talk to people... play around on the site, make friends... that's the best possible way of recruiting people to help your group.
THATS IT!!!

Thats not what I want to do, I want to help, and I dont think I am (doing what you said) at all, because this is the first group I've made.
I've said (more than once) I'm not 'Liam'
THATS IT!!!
A Super Furry Animal Posted Jan 31, 2004
We know you're not Liam. You are, however, a moron.
THATS IT!!!
Whisky Posted Jan 31, 2004
Ok then, you're not Liam... there's an easy way to prove us wrong... make sure you don't act like he did... All those points I made were things he's done repeatedly - if you can avoid all the mistakes he's made and make an effort to integrate yourself into the site then people may start respecting you for who you are and what you want to do!
THATS IT!!!

and I see no halm in the way I am working things now.
I havent ASKED anyone to join, and wont be doing.
I know if they want to join, they will let me know.
THATS IT!!!
@Unofficial Site Assistant (USA)@ Posted Jan 31, 2004
If you look at my messages, you will see I've had help from ACEs on GuideML thank you very much.
And I've been searching and read the information in the GuideML clinic.

Junior, I am prepared to take you at face value in this thread and not see you as any other h2g2 ID.
>>I dont want any trouble, just to help.. whats so wrong with that?<<
If you are genuinely interested in the problems that people perceive with the recent help groups, here is a summary:
1. There have been multiple help groups set up by new researchers that are problematic for the following reasons. If you are not any of those previous researchers, at least be sensitive to the fact that this has been happening on the site, and is considered a problem. Maybe postpone your own group for a couple of weeks (or longer) until things settle down.
2. The multiple groups set up were:
(a) easily mistaken for official help groups
(b) giving unhelpful advice, by someone who didn't know much about the site
(c) unsubcribing from threads where they had offered advice, so that the researcher being helped was left after the initial postings.
>>and dont say nothing, because I've had loads of messages saying I cant help, and that I'm not allowed to.. to be quit honest, I think the current help groups are scarred it will take all there years of work away, well it wont, I want to work along side them, helping newbies and maybe even finding new things out myself.
I'm not saying I know more than anyone else, but I do want to help, and so thats what I'm trying to do... If people will accept my help group and not send nasty sarcastic messages to me<<
h2g2 is a very robust community. People don't have a problem saying what they think. It pays to develop a thick skin to some extent, as there are varying degrees of courtesy (or lack of) in posts.
Having said that, it's useful in this situation to pay attention to what older researchers are saying. If there is one thing that has come up again and again in this whole saga of the new help groups, it is that the researcher/s involved don't appear to know much about the site. As a new researcher this may not seem important to you, but it is important to many of the people here. The general advice in this situation is to take the time to get to know the place, *and* the people who are here. Then get on with your help group
I would also add that some researchers are losing their patience with the whole thing (as you will have noticed). Other researchers still have goodwill towards you. This won't last indefinitely though if you continue to ignore what people are saying.
kea.
