Lord of the Rings: What did Tolkien mean?
Recumbentman Posted Mar 22, 2004
"The important thing would not be the medium but the dedication and involvement of the creators of such a work" -- hear hear. Jackson can hardly be faulted on dedication or involvement. He was also imaginatively creative and supremely well organised, and seems to have managed his actors extraordinarily well.

I don't think specifically anime Tolkein, in the sense of Japanese cartoons with poor animation and people with no teeth and big eyes, would work that well, but I think a cartoon version would be quite good. I think there are things described in the Silmarillion that are just too fantastic to represent visually unless its done in a quite stylistic way. How, for instance, do you do Luthien, who is meant to be pretty darn hot, as an actress? Who would live up to 'most beautiful person ever'?
Della, if you like Turin (I think its Turumbar) then there is a longer version of the story somewhere; I think its in Unfinished Tales.

I'll check out Unfinished Tales as soon as I can. (I always dream about whatever I read before bed - I am *sure* I dreamed of Beren and Luthien last night.)

I may be quite behind in which term means what in animation, I did believe that anime was the successor to manga, but the latest posts suggest I may have got that wrong. Stylistic elements might have overtaken the artistic quality which I remember from Akira ect.
Jacksons committment to the LOTR project has allowed me to forgive him much of his ommissions and alterations.
I thing the Sillmarillion would make a remarkable film of one kind or another. I suspect that it would be easier to make 'episodes' rather than attempt the whole book at once. Of the third age and the rings of power has to a great extent been done in the current opus, but it would be interesting to see Sauron looking and speaking fair.
There is probably enough in the silmarillion to keep a whole army of film makers at work for several decades though.

Manga: a particular style of comic book.
Anime: Animated shows/films often based on Manga.
Although I understand the two terms are now more or less interchangable.

Im sure with enough kicking we can get it upto a four didget number. Ive been directing people from my group over here to contribute (the tolkien film and book society.. not that im using this to advertise or anything)
I be apprehensive about there being anymore tolkien films/tv series (e.g the hobbit, the silmarillion) mainly because the films are brilliant, and i can imagine someone getting there hands on it and not doing them justice (in it for the money basically). What Jacksons done is create a film that has remained pretty much untouched by a money grabbing influence, or an attempt to majorly cash in. I think that the hobbit wont fair as well in someone elses hands.
As for the silmarillion.. well ive not read it, but id want someone whos obsessed with the books working on it.

More importantly LOTR will hopefully open the doors for other fantasies to be filmed, and filmed with a decent eye. Most of the stuff Weta made should be around, so it should be possible to use them in similar films, even miniseries would be acceptable
Amber done with the same production values as LOTR would rock! Lord of Light or even better Ash : A Secret History. That I would pay to see. Until later....

I must admit I would like some of Mary Stewarts Merlin books 'The Chrystal Cave' ect on film not to mention Ann McCafferys Dragonriders of Pern. Or Blessings of Blessings Some of Pratchets books.
With Luck the Hobbit will be forgotten for a while until someone with committment drags it out from under the dust and makes a decent job of it.

I think the Dark Materials books might make a good film.

See the thing is, would you really want a middle earth miniseries? How much would/could/should be left out? who are the main charecters? Apart from talking about the war of the ring, what do they do all day?
The only person who'd have the commeittment to do the hobbit is peter jackson, hes proved that by spending the past seven years making lotr.
Anything involving dragons is going to be tricky, and can easily be screwed up (look at D&D if you dare)

Film Anne McCaffery? What did we do to deserve that threat?
Film some Gemmel, by all means. Film some China Mieville. But not Anne McCaffery, for the sake of the world's supply of insulin.
And if you MUST film McCaffery, how about the Ship series. If anyone lays hands on the ing Pern stories I swear, I swear I'll buy a high powered rifle and pot the director.

How about Margaret Weis - The DragonLance series or The Starshield Trilogy or even better the Star of the Guardians.
Sword of Shannaha series by Terry Brooks or even better his Running with the Demon Trilogy.
All would make brilliant films.

Well, there's the thing ... it's always nerve-wracking, waiting to see how a film from a book one loves, has turned out.

I think to make a film you need someone in charge who loves the books themselves.
