Lord of the Rings: What did Tolkien mean?
Recumbentman Posted May 4, 2004
Who dared disturb the peaceful slumber of this thread, long after its duty was accomplished and its question answered? Ah well, here we go again.
Quote from the Cat Woman: "Denethor went barking mad because of the Palantir, and the contact he made with Sauron, which filled him with fear . . . "
An early warning about the baleful influence of watching too much TV.
I read the results of a survey on the effects of watching violence on TV. It did not make people violent (though it may prompt violent people to act); rather it made people afraid to go outside their houses.
Over the weekend we had celebrations in Dublin to welcome the ten new states into the EU. It was a joyous happy affair with folk-singing and dancing and free food and wine and beer and good cheer all round. The Americans in our city were told by their embassy to stay away, as violence was expected. (A few placards were thrown, maybe some bottles; but that was at a gate of the Park, not in the city centre where the celebrations took place). They've been watching too much TV.

Good point. Id advise anybody with a spare few coppers to go rent bowling for columbine. It basically sums that up entirely.

I agree SD - this is the core of it all...

"The Americans in our city were told by their embassy to stay away, as violence was expected"
A thing I heard, years ago, about a talk given to American troops in Germany.
They were told: German beer is a lot stronger that you are used to. Do not attempt to out drink the locals, they will find you amusing. There are several bars in which the British troops drink. Do not go there. The British are used to this strength of beer and they will definitely out drink you. Also, they play rough and any injury sustained because of fratenization with the Brits will be considered self-inflicted.
This has nothing to do with the thread, but it's a wonderful day and I don't feel like wading into Annie Laurie or Strontium Dog (and besides, that was my fav. 2000AD strip, back in the day, after 'Dredd' of course) because they're mostly right and that's good enough for Jazz.
And anyway, anyone in their right minds would want to be in the middle of a city full of happy, boozy Dubliners because the Irish are nice people and fun to be with. In London, half the population would turn out to scam the tourists and the other half to mug the scammers.

Jeeez, can't I go AWT (absent with towel) for a month without you lot going around and reviving threads?
Good to see it back, though.
Not much to say really; read through Gradient, SD, and Sho's discussion with some interest. Don't agree with everything, but it's Friday, I'm tired, and as Gradient said, it's good enough for jazz
cheers

no, you may not go AWT.... anyhoooo shouldn't you be watching The Royal Wedding and getting wasted right about now?
I've finally finished this year's walz through LOTR. I really really do love the Merry and Pippin story. The way they are at the end, having come through so much, seen so much and so on, but boy did they learn a lot. They grew such a lot, not just in stature.
To answer the original question in this thread. What did Tolkien mean? He meant: watch and learn.
to fetch The Silmarillion. I'm going to take a really good run at it this time. Perhaps I will be back on "ask" with a Silmarillion thread.

Well, I finished the Silmarillion some time in March, and it is *well* worth it, I thought. Good luck with it! It's awesome

I've read it twice since I got it for Christmas (1978 I think) but I'm still no closer to understanding/remembering/enjoying it. Third time lucky, I hope.

Sho, don't you bring up that accursed wedding thingumagig around me. The entire Danish media, from the conservative to the relatively republican left wing press, have run amok. Apparently, nothing has been going on in the world for the last month or so more important than how a Danish soldier (who's in his midthirties and still living with his parents) is marrying some Aussie IT-consultant (whose father wears a skirt). Now, they're doing zarking reruns and highlights...
But yes, I did get wasted
Ah, Silmarillion, yes. More of a work to be read out of intellectual curiosity than because it's terribly exciting. But good, nonetheless.
If you start a thread, do plug it here or I'll probably miss it...
cheers

Yes, Sho, do you still intend to start a Silmarillion thread? I agree with Bistroist, it's not as *exciting* as LOTR, but it certainly is good.

still reading lord of the rings
still stuck at bree

Sho - employed again! Posted May 18, 2004
Bree is fantastic, you have some of the best bits (IMO) to come, right now. Weathertop and the whole bruinen thing... and Rivendell...mmmmmmm
Bistro... sorry for bringing up the R***l W*****g - I won't mention it again
As for a Silmarillion thread - I think my space? Ask h2g2 is probably not quite the right place for it. I'll be starting on Thursday (weather permitting) because it's a day off here and I can get a good long run up at it. I hope.

Bistroist Posted May 18, 2004
Sho, try and guess exactly what motivated me to turn on my pc right now. Yep, more highlights on the tube...
Asmodai, if you're at Bree, you're through the hard bit. Then rest of the book is relatively similar* to what you already know from the film. It's all downhill work from there, promise
cheers

This thread is a lot like Jazz music.
You think it's over and you're half way to the bar when it turns out the Trombonist was taking a deep breath and you're off again.
Any short, hairy footed people lurking who'd like to volunteer to take this thread back to Ask H2G2 and chuck it in a fire?

Okies... if any short-hairy-footed-peeps try to take this thread back to anywhere and burn it... they'll have me and my to reckon with
I'm about to start the Silmarillion. Rather than start a thread on Ask I'm starting a thread on my PS (yes, a blatant attempt to make it more lively.... I mean, I can't spend the rest of my h2g2 life tarred with the epithet "the one with the Drool thread on her PS" now, can I?
Oh, I can? hmmmmmm
Anyhooo... let's see if this works. There should follow a link to the thing I started about The Silmarillion. If not, anyone who wants to talk about it will just have to grit their teeth and look on my space. (beware, the floor is slippery from all the )

People of the male persuasion are welcome too... we have already had several posts over JadziaDax already. We do have one or two regular guys who
there, but the more the merrier I say.
Don't let the fact that most of us are no longer put you off...
