Re: Lib Dems - I would have thought that amongst a few other reasons for voting for them or at least voting against the other two, the fact that they've had no government experience could be taken as a good thing - they've no baggage and could bring some new ideas. ["I'd rather vote for one of two parties with experience but neither of whom I particularly like than..." ???] Besides, surely being in Opposition first would give them time as Shadow ministers to gain further information/experience in their respective briefs which they already have spokespeople for...
sorry, what was my point? I dunno
btw does anyone know at what point Labour overtook the old Liberal Party because I know the Liberals *used* to be one of the big 2
ahem. what was the question?
b) I think or possibly a)
b) because of Poll Tax (which was inflicted North of the Border a year before everyone else.... not that I'm bitter, you understand) amongst many other general anti-Tory reasons - destruction of community and industries for example?
a) because I don't believe Labour (or anyone) should be in power for too long at once. two terms or up to 10 years should be a statutory limit, as with American presidents - aren't they limited to 2 terms/8 years?
but that's all IMHO, of course

Labour overtook the Liberals after the First World war. Henry Asquith was the Liberal PM going into the War Lloyd George took over during it. DLG held unot to power after the war through a national governemnt before the Tories wised up to the weakness in the Liberal vote nad pulled out of the agreement.
Labours first administration was in the 1920s

Surely this was mentioned by Nostradamus as a sign or portent of something or other ....And from the West will rise the Smarmy One and he shall be Smarm in all its smarminess

Someone earlier mentioned his slim majority. Presumably a change to a safer constituency seat could be engineered?

What's the fun in that? politics in only interesting when there's an slaying of a "heavyweight" at an election. How I laughed when Portaloo lost his seat in Enfield back in 1997

I don't think we Llanelliites will have any problem not voting for Michael Howard. I quote one of my neighbours who knew him as a boy "Cheeky little b*gg*r."
Michael Howard's seat is only marginal because of the sorry state of the Tory Party (the word schadenfreude [sp?] springs to mind). If he loses it Charles Kennedy is going to be leader of the opposition anyway.
