I watched Total Recall last night. I've seen it many times, but I seem to be in the minority when I'm convinced that the whole thing Was a dream, implanted by Rekal. Anyone else with me on this?

Noggin the Nog Posted Jun 15, 2003
It can be taken either way.
But how come Rekal have the picture of his Martian girlfriend on their computer before they start?

I put it in the "enjoyable nonsense" category.
But how come Arnold says he's "hetero" when everyone knows he's bicepsual?
Bad joke

Glottis Posted Jun 15, 2003
Yeah, it can pretty much be taken either way. But - as mentioned above, Rekal have a picture of Melina, plus he dreams about her at the start. And Lori and his builder mate both keep looking really suspicious whenever he says something out of the ordinary.
It's certainly a better movie than some of the other shite they've made based on Philip K Dick stories (like Imposter, what a shocking film).

Blues Shark - how can you say that? It's a fantastic movie. Especially the bulging eyeball scene .
I think the whole point is that you can't know if it is a dream or not. So much subtler than The Matrix.

I didn't see the whole thing last night, but I'd like to think that it was all a dream/self-congratulatory fantasy. Especially the ending
Is it just me or can Arnie not swear convincingly in English? As well as speak, obviously...
Total Recall
Dogster Posted Jun 15, 2003
My favourite Arnie swearing scene is the one in Terminator - the picture flicks to robot-vision and a list of possible things he could say appears on the screen, a little pointer scrolls down to "f**k you a**hole", the picture goes back to normal and Arnie delivers the line in his best robotic voice. Classic.

How can i say it? Simple. Total Recall is one of the biggest piles of sh*te commited to celluloid.
It is without single redeemimg feature in either script acting or direction.

*cough* We are talking about the same movie here, aren't we?
Subtleties have to exist to be noticed.

I liked Total Recall...it was something you had to watch because you wanted to know where it was going.
The acting was silly but if you just watched...it was entertaining.
Total Recall is based on a Phillip K Dick story???
Didn't Philip K Dick write Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep???
Total Recall
Milos Posted Jun 15, 2003
It wasn't a bad movie... I haven't watched it in awhile but I distinctly remember enjoying it. It was certainly better than some other Arnie movies I could mention (like Twins or Junior ) but not quite as enjoyable as others, like True Lies.
I'm sorry, but I just don't have any tolerance for Terminator at all.

I just had a look at Total Recall on IMDB and was most pleased to find that the tagline for this film was "They stole his mind, now he wants it back." - If that isn't a subtlety I don't know what is.
Alright, so I lied about the subtleties.
To be honest, I like this film because it made me laugh throughout. I have a thing for self-conciously awful films - the only thing I can't stand is awful films with pretensions.

*Cough*Matrix*Cough*
Okay, it's not exactly awful. Quite the opposite, really. But pretensions? Hmm.

Loup Dargent Posted Jun 15, 2003
andrea... yep... philip k dick wrote "do androids dream of electric sheep?!" and the movie based on it was "blade runner" if i'm not mistaken...

Love it, it's parody from start to finish, not quite in the True Lies league, which I've also seen at least 4 times and am word perfect in large chunks.
Also like twins, esp where Arnie on plane singing unselfconsciously along to the walkman playing 'yakkity yak'

Parody? Total Recall may be one of the mos UNINTENTIONALLY hilarious films ever made, but where does the idea it's a parody come from?
And yes, whoever mentioned the Matrix, quite right. Pretentious cobblers from start to finish...

Hedrigall Posted Jun 17, 2003
Total Recall was based on a Dick short story, "We can Remember It For You Wholesale". The Dick story was funny, brief and had a twist in the tail, so you can tell it wasn't a very good adaptation

Total Recall was based on PKD's "We can remember it for you wholesale"
A list of other adaptations:
Minority Report - "Minority report"
Impostor - "Impostor"
Screamers - "Second variety"
Confessions d'un Barjo - "Confessions of a crap artist"
Blade Runner - "Do androids dream of electric sheep"
Apparently Paycheck (based on "Paycheck") is also currently in production.
