Piercing

Post 1

So I havent had any image changes for a while now, Im thinking about getting me chin pierced, the bit below my lip. But, I need to know more first, can anyone help...

How long does it have to stay in before it can be removed temporarily?

How do prospective employers view it? (I know it wont be good, but how bad...)

Ummm, and any other info, also those of you that have seen me can advise on whether it would look good or not.

cheers...

Ouch! Are you sure you want to get that done?

It would have to stay in a good couple of months (it might grow out AFAIK, unless the stud (?) is titanium), and I wouldn't imagine prospective employers would like it. Unless you get a job in a music shoppy type place.

Why don't you get something a little less...obvious? Like your ears or your nose or your eyebrow? They are more socially acceptable now. Especially being that you are in the middle of job-liness.

Painful!!
I can't imagine it does your teeth or your gums any favours either, just to sound like an old woman!
I'd agree with Sat on this one - there are a lot of other things you can get done that are more socially acceptable these days. I think that employers wouldn't be too happy about it and even if you remove it when it has settled, there'll still be a hole in your face...smiley - erm

Nose, ear, eyebrow? Naaah, I dont think so. Not so me, all or nothing....

This job wouldnt have a problem with the piercing, its when I leave, soon.

Nah. It's fine with the teeth/gums. Just depends on how good the piercer is. He knows the good places.

I reckon you should get your eyebrow done Bob. Would suit you.

No, but but I dont fancy a pierced tongue...

So was that agreement that Id look good with a pierced eyebrow?
Hmmm, tempting in its way, the chin can always wait...

Who else thinks Id look good with a pierced eyebrow?

Oh, and how much do piercings cost? I know about tats, but nothing about piercings...

Yes. Agreement with the eyebrow.

Should be about £30/40 with a decent piercer. At least that's what I remember when I was sat in the tattoo parlour.

Tongue piercings are very attractive, in my opinion. However, as I would never have my tongue pierced, that's a bit unfair, isn't it.

They are a lot of hassle. Your tongue is an important part of your day to day activity. I would never get that as a first piercing. Not to mention the whole no-spicy-foods-no-oral-sex and the swollen tongue thing...

Alkland - In need of a SHIBBY!

Don't know what you look like Bob, but let me give you first hand info. Got numerous piercings myself including eyebrow, tongue and chin. My chin was by far the most painful of the 3. Second only to my tongue. Although it may seem unlikely it's actually harder to eat when you've had your bottom lip pierced than it is when you have your tongue done. Be prepared to eat soup and chew very gingerly for at least a week. As to how long you need it in for. They told me 6 weeks before I could take it out. I left it for a little longer, went and had the stud changed to a ring and it went septic. So it's not without it's perils. However, I've got a huge spike to go on the same back as my stud which is great for clubbing in our local rock club and when my lip's fully healed I'm going for a ring again.

Potential employers - not a problem. Got through a fairly tough interview with two oldish distinguished managers with mine in. When the point comes when you get to ask the interviewer questions, just ask "Are my piercings a problem". The fact you've addressed the situation usually shows you're aware and thinking of the company's image and nine times out of ten they've said to me "not a problem"

Hope this helps.

So, how painful are piercings in general, just out of interest... Do you have any tats for comparison?

I must admit, I don't like the chin piercings much, but that's probably just cos I'm getting on a bit - almost a generation gap!

I do really like eyebrows, noses etc. though.

No, although I do want one.

As a comparison, I jumped in at the deep end and my tongue was the first thing I had pierced. I never thought any piercings would be as painful. My eyebrow and ears were all fine, but my bottom lip hurt really bad.

If you've ever trapped a finger in a car door or something similar, you know the sort of rush of pain you get followed by a dull ache that lasts for hours? It's like that only more painful and the dull ache lasts for at least a week. I'm not trying to put you off, I fully intend to have a tat AND more piercings but it's best you know. If, as everyone says you'd look good with an eyebrow piercing, why not give that a go first? It won't hurt as much as your toungue or bottom lip, but you'll get a good idea. Once again though, be prepared to sport a black eye for around a fortnight. However you'll find after about 5 people have already asked where the black eye came from, you'll suddenly become very proud of it and want to show everyone your piercings.

Most piercings are *hot*...the only one's I don't like are the c**k piercings...

In my experience, I had a top-of-the-ear piercing done badly, and it obviously went wrong. You should never have piercings done with a gun. And it hurt more than a tat, because it was sore for MONTHS afterwards. I can put up with the tattoo needle, but not the soreness of the piercing. You can't catch a tattoo on anything...you can't rip it out. OK, so a piercing can be taken out, but not right away. I would rather permanence than inconvenience.
