Anyway, not that I'm a big hockey fan but it's Playoff time so I couldn't resist posting SEE Magazine's 5 Best Hockey Songs (& my rating/opinion/vote/whatever)
"The Ballad Of Wendel Clark" by The Rheostatics (have to admit...? - see #5)
"The Hockey Song" by Stompin' Tom Connors ( kind of a folksy )
"Hockey Song" by Jughead (also ?)
"Fifty Mission Cup" by The Tragically Hip (major )
"Hockey" by Jane Siberry (not a big fan)

The Ballad of Wendell Clark and Jane Siberry's Hockey are both rather remarkable, in my opinion. Well worth finding and giving a pair of s to.

Sounds good..have to admit, I can be a bit musically narrow minded - I like what I like & run the risk of 'playing it to death'!

"It's Forty below and I don't give a (BEEP)
Cause I'm off to the Rod-e-o!"
The Rodeo Song is one I have loved forever. Now I only hear it once in a while during Stampede.
Canadian politics, as you said Jazz and Clio (hi, btw) can be stulifyingly boring as opposed to mudslinging. Think on this ... Nobody ever tried to blow up our parliament and no on drove a plane into our Pentagon, either! Compared to what I hear during U.S. and sometimes even British, French and German elections, I find Canadian politics team.
Lookee, even when we have our own Shawinigangate, our Loyal Minister of the Opposition, Stupid Stock flubs the investigation by letting ht liberals get wind he's hired a private investigator! Geez, the Watergate journalists were tidier than that!
Anagha, congrats on your topic making front page ... we rock!
Speaking of which my fave 'new' song by a young gal who is very "Complicated" is still "Sk8tr Boi". Avril Lavigne is something special.
And hats off to friend Colin Mochrie. We bought "Tuxedo" with Jackie Chan just for Colin's role in the movie (he was so good as a snarky museum curator). Colin, Heather, Carol, Noel et al (and my make-up) will long be remembered for "Dracula, Baby" and maybe ... some noon time hijinks over the P.A. System with Young Other Alan, Mr. R? Aren't we all glad that Once Quiet Colin didn't go into Marine Biology?
I am always amazed at how many talented people I've known in my life time and how much I treasure knowing them when we were so much younger.
So, it isn't all about bad politics, there are some good successes due to our Canadian Upbringing and yes, like Avril, we do so ROCK!

Had to comment on the above listing of great hockey songs. While the jughead one is my favorite to perform here in Japan - I've written a special tokyo verse - the all time greatest hockey recording is the Theme from Hockey Night In Canada as performed by the Shuffle Demons.

Gee, the shuffle demons. I haven't thought of them in a while. But now and then "Spadina Bus" comes into my head. Unbidden. Like Stompin' Tom (but without the pain). Weird.

But what of the classics? (Eveniing all, home and away) My first real sexual experience was to the sound of Leonard Cohen (perhaps I should rephrase that!) Stan Rogers got me through a divorce!
btw, I have worked three Olympics as a video techie guy and each had a wonderful similarity. The bus or the car or the van that drove us back to the accommodations had either a cassette player or a CD player that played burned CDs. I was renowned as the crazy Canadian who had tapes and CDs of wonderful music- every bit of which was Canadian. I usually left the tapes and CDs with the locals. I know there are people in Norway, Tennesee, NY city, San Fransisco, Holland, and Britain that happily took them home.

This is hockey songs, Zoomer, not first sexual experience and divorce (last sexual experience?) songs. Leonard Cohen hasn't done any hockey songs (although it's a fascinating idea). I don't think Stan Rogers did either.
(I'm going to e-mail Leonard right now with this idea!)

I thought the hockey part had been exhausted! I will endeavour not to branch out to other subjects in this most specialised of threads.

okay, here's what I sent him:
"Some of us were just sitting around discussing great Canadian Hockey Songs and we realized that there is a huge gap in that Leonard Cohen has not done a Hockey Song. Is there any possibility that this may happen?"
Do you think he'll do it?

Hey everyone,
I'm ashamed to admit that I'm Canadian and I don't recognize half of the hockey songs mentioned here (maybe I've heard em but never knew the titles, hmm..)

It's okay, Clio. I only recognized two of jazzedupcurry's five. But if Leonard accepts my request, everyone will remember it!

Excellent! I love hockey. (we need a hockey smiley, don't you think?) Although I must admit that the music played at the games is not the reason. They usually only played the Hockey song (Stompin Tom[my mom met him once])during the playoffs when I used to go to the local BCJHL games.

I got those from a free arts & entertainment paper Clio, the 2 that I gave the 'thumbs up' to, were the only 2 I'd heard, & while I vaguely knew of The Rheostatics likelyhood of having done at least one hockey-themed song, like I said, I'm not a big fan.

(Clio, are you sure you can stand this brief foray into testosteroni hockeydom?)
