I'm wondering where the thread originator went off to. Just when the conversation was getting interesting, he up and leaves. Perhaps he needed to find another outlet for all that creativity of his.

No, he was being creative. Because he is, after all "The most creative person you will ever know*...
...or something to that effect...

Oh dear - do you think I upset him ?
Regarding animal intelligence - how about 'Horse sense is that faculty that stops horses betting on humans'

I wouldn't worry about it. If he got upset at your last comment, then he gets upset way too easily.
I'm betting he left because we didn't all immediately fall down and worship him for his "creativity" and "intelligence." He is, after all, "one of the most creative people you will ever read." I, for one, did not give him the respect that is due such a creative person; I blame my idiotically "creative" roommates for jading me to such blinding creativity.

Have you checked out his PS? (I've stumbled through the backlog to get here so I think I'm allowed to say something) He looks to be one of those odd-bods who joins and regrettably leaves only too quickly. Creativity gets in the way of people finding out what this place is really about. And for.
I regret very much that people a bit off the H2G2 beaten path often lose heart so soon. Or are discouraged too readily. While I love it here and have spent the best part of the last two years here, I would be delighted to have more input from people outside the limited circle that the researchers here are from. You can count the people who are not white or not (in the loosest sense) Christian on the fingers of one hand.
Oh yes. Smart vs intelligent. It's a trend word, smart. I would only apply it to someone who dresses neatly. However, when it comes to intelligent vs. knowledgeable, I'm ready to hear people's views.
IMHO you can know things but not necessarily be intelligent. There are people, for example, who get good marks at school by learning things off by heart, but when asked to explain something, or follow on and draw conclusions, are absolutely stumped.
We need both this kind of person and the kind of person who can draw conclusions and work out consequences from some given information. To use a school example, physicists and mathematicians vs. chemists and biologists.
So however you define intelligent, intellectual and smart, please don't claim that the one is superior to the other. They complement each other, that's all.

*ahem*
I could have read that wrong, but;
I only know of two white Christians.
And one of them is Justin the Preacher...
I think that was an unfair assumption of a comment. No two people that I have ever posted to are the same...not all of them are white...not all of them are British...not all of them are the same religion. There are obvious trends...but no one is even remotely similar to anyone else on here.
Especially me!

The only commonality between all the people online here, it seems, is that we have a *reason* for being here. Some people are highly shy or even anti-social. Some are just plain odd. Some yearn for human contact but don't receive any in real life. We all just have reasons that an online community appeals to us.
Used to be able to say that everyone had read the hitchhiker's books, but sadly no longer.

I've read the books, listened to the radio show, watched the television series, have the LPs and played the game, but that isn't what brought me here. I wandered in from the BBC site - and can't find the exit. You should get some signs in here.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
