But technology isn't what I look forward to in the future anyway. It's more the freedom and well being and such I want. No more diseases, no more work, no more war. Those kind of things.

Pheloxi, interesting you should quote a song that weas so laden with irony.
As I remember the shades in question were needed to guard against the fireball of a nuclear explosion, certainly in the video.

And just to disprove the theory that *anything* has crawled up my arse and died, here are some lyrics from one of my favorite bands. They are totally non-ironic, and sometimes I even agree with them.
'Convenience and pleasure
All blended together
And culture, and madness
You think you've seen it all
You've seen it all except the future'
Sparks, The Future.

I'm know I'm showing my age here, but did anyone read the 2000AD comic during the early eighties?
We should have been invaded by the Volgs by now...

I've had this discussion before - esp. about the silver jumpsuits Where ARE all those cool things that they predicted?
My theory is, while we might not have readily-accessible flying cars, the technology we DO have would definitely boggle the minds of those who were fantasizing about where we would be today. Can you imagine showing someone from the 50s a CORDED phone the size of a cellphone? Much less getting them to believe that it was operating wirelessly?
It's all a matter of perspective. Doesn't seem that cool to us, because we're in the middle of it. Eh, no big deal, we think. How can it be better and faster (and smaller), we ask. Meanwhile, zap in some clueless soul from the fifties (meaning one who HASN'T evolved along with the rest of the world), and he'll think he's in the 30th century.

Kate...I'm slightly insulted by your disregard for my Absinthe...ah well, each to their own...and mobile ringtones come from the big red scaly anus of the prince of darkness.
