Are we living in the future yet?

Yeah man, we should be colonising the moon by now, or at least hanging around up there every now and then. Why is that? (aside form the fact that the U.S would rather spend their budget on the military-Industrial complex.)

The general idea that we shouldn't do anything that we don't get money out of. What do people want to do with all those money?

The future will be based on Virtual Reality. (Sweeping bold prediction for you there!)
I don't think anybody will bother travelling anymore. They'll be just be plugging into a 100% realistic computer simulation. Anybody seen the film Xistence (or exZistence - it might even have been a different word!) Didn't like the film but of all the sci-fi things kicking about it looks the most plausible.

Bill Hicks, the late great comedian once noted that with the all the money that the United States ALONE spent on arms each year we could feed and clothe the poor and homeless of the world, not ONE human being excluded and we, as one race could explore space, both inner and outer, in peace FOREVER.
He was a dreamer,man....but he's not the only one.

The fuel companies are holding back the production of the water-powered car, so I wonder how much are we held back by big corporations self-interest?
Anyone see The Chronicle?

Of course, the other politically loaded answer to the question is;
Compared to the life of a subsistence farmer in, ohh, at random, Mongolia, then yeah, you're living in the future, because he's still living in the middle ages.
All things are relative.
Personally, I'd settle for a future that held a little more social justice, a little less money-grabbing, and a lot less bl**dy bubble cities and flying cars.

People who predict the future invariably get it completely wrong. I don't think I've read a single "future prediction" article that got things right. As recently as 2000 there was a piece in a newspaper predicting the political state of the world for the 21st century. Thanks to the events of 11/9 it's already pretty much irrelevant.
This hasn't stopped us trying though, newspapers and magazines are still filled with predictions for the "next ten years" that are almost certain not to come true.

Well, I suppose they'd be great for the elite that could afford them.
While the kids in east asia continue to make trainers for pennies.
Sorry, can't get excited about technology unless there is a sense of responsibility to go with it.
Given the present stance of the US government, I'm actually pretty glad that they aren't colonising the moon.
You think Dubya would have supported 'We came in peace *FOR ALL MANKIND*.
I mean, if he did, he'd think they were talking about Mick Foley. sheesh.

Yes, but as my good friend Xanatic has previously pointed out...some predictions come true, look at the flying car-already here but not for the public yet.
It seems that the future is here but only to those who can afford it.

I want one of those personal helicopter things. I think this every time I waste hours of my life in traffic on the M25 or when waiting on a windy platform at Bath Spa for delayed trains.
Blues I agree of course, but am sticking to the trivial for this thread at least
